I just now fixed a PC that has been sitting here for a long time, it is using Windows XP. When I started up IE for the first time, it said that it could not open up the search page. So I tried loging into the router, and that worked. Now, whenever I try to type anything at all into the address bar, it prompts for username and password. When I leave it blank, it says 401 not authorized, and when I put in the router's info, it takes me to the router home page. Why? And also, Maple Story, a random MMORPG, will not work. The gameguard, which supposedly protects against hacking, will connect halfway, then it gives me the message that it could not connect to the server. Maybe these 2 problems are related, and somehow settings within IE are affecting other stuff. I know that getting the latest updates might fix it, but without IE working, it takes a real long time for Windows to see that there is an update. I have tried everything I can think of, like resetting the IE settings to default, changing random settings, ect. Help please :(

EDIT: Also, I just found out that IE Tab in Firefox gives me an error message when I try to open any site.

Run WinsockfixXP ... get it from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.html

Also do you have any other browser installed ? ? If so, does it work correct ? ?

If not, then check the Network Connection settings to be sure they are to "Obtain IP Automatically"
Same on the Router .. make sure it set to Assign IP Automatically

In IE check your setting under Tools, Options .. select Direct Connection to Internet

Edit to fix link

Thanks for replying. As for the provided link, I did not see anything related to winsockfix, only stuff of how to create an el torito bootable CD-ROM. When I did a search for it, I never got a program or anything. You were referring to a program, were'nt you? Also, my IP stuff is correct, Firefox does work, and I am set up to direct to the internet directly.

That did not fix it, I had to do a system restore to get the internet working on firefox again. Do I need to do something else? It gives me a server not found or DNS error or whatever message.

At that point I would run Winsockfix again ... it resets the tcp stack

Well, I ran it twice, and now it is giving me the same thing- it asks for the router username and password, and wont let me do anything else. So maybe it is just as simple as having a wrong setting, but I have no idea of what it could be.

YAY. I finally fixed it. Under IE settings, connections, LAN connections, somebody set it up to go through the proxy 192.168.0.1, my router. TY for the help though, and you guys have a good day.
