I want to install SQL Server STD edition to a windows 2000 professional laptop. If I try to install it says I can't install (since it wants w2k server or above). I *can* install the "desktop" edition, but that wont let me DTS to/from our work servers. This *can* be got around by changing the server's licensing system to per seat instead of per server, but that'd mess up everything else in the office :)

I've heard that the proper version of SQl can be installed by tricking it with a silent install, using the script file from another installation or something.

Can someone talk me through this, or come up with another solution to get me a DTS-able SQL installation on my laptop with w2k pro.

Cheers!

PS have access to both 2000 and 7.0 but would rather use 7.0 to remain 100% compatible with our current sql installs.

does SQL 7.0 require win2k server to install? i've installed SQL Server 2000 on many win2k pro machines for development purposes and have never had any problems. can't you install the server and client tools, and then just register your work servers in enterprise manager? sorry this probably doesn't help that much though does it....

you should be trying to install the developer edition on w2kpro.
