long story short but my wife's mac got hosed and she lost all the music she had on it.
fortunately, her iPod still has all her collection.

what do I need to use to transfer all her music from her 3g ipod to my xp machine?
hopefully, there are some free s/w that can do this?

to make matters worse, now she wants a new ipod also so I need to clear all the music on her existing iPod.

so I need to accomplish two things to earn some major brownie points.
1) transfer music from iPod to xp laptop.
2) transfer music from xp laptop to her new macbook and then from macbook to her NEW iPod.

Please help........i'm an ipod newbie....

you're better off doing this:
old ipod music --> new macbook --> new ipod

use senuti to get the music from the old ipod onto the new mackbook: http://www.fadingred.org/senuti/

you can then use itunes again to sync the macbook with the new ipod

If she has been using the iPod with a mac windows wont read I don't think. So you're best to just put the music back on her macbook rather then the xp machine.

this depends on how the iPod was originally formatted. I had a nano prior to getting a MBP and the MBP read it just fine since it was windows formatted.

OP, I've used iPodRip (sorry, no link ATM) successfully; however I dont know if either of the programs suggested are OSX 10.5 compatible.

The best move is to go old ipod -> mac -> new ipod. Talk to a Mac Genius, there should be a way to transfer your old music to a new machine & iPod...they might be able to do it in store.

Apple wont do it. I asked when my first iPod broke. They just said Apple designed the iPod to work one way as far as syncing indicating there was nothing they could do, then the guy just asked if I had checked version tracker hinting that were programs that could get my music off.

But from my experiences if your wife had formatted the iPod to use on her Mac then Windows flat out wont read it. If it was formatted in Windows first then used with Mac that's a different story. But you will never know until you try right? Just make sure you don't hit Sync to new library when trying.
