Help needed "Exisiting domain controller W2K"

SpeedTester

Senior member
Hello,
I am trying to setup active directory in W2K Advanced server and cant get it to work.
I am trying to setup it up as a Existing domain controller on our existing network. It brings me to the
last part of the setup when it starts to configure and gives me the following error.
"The operation failed with the following error"
"The specified domain either does not exist or can not be contacted"

Is there something that has to be done at the 1st server or am I forgetting to do something prior
to running active directory?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Is the server that you are trying to join your existing domain already a member server? Are DNS server information correct?

Yes the primary server is setup as a member server, as far as I know the DNS is setup properly,
although one thing is kinda strange when I run active directory setup on the 2nd server.
When it asked you for the domain name and username/pw when I type in "quadfx.com" it says
cannot locate server, however when I put in "quadfx" it finds the server then says do you wish to use
"Quadfx.com". Perhaps something is fubar on the server upstairs. Perhaps you could point me in the right direction.

Thanks again.

Althought I am not totally sure on this. But I think when it ask you for the domain name during the addition of child DC it ment the NETBIOS name which would be "quadfx".

Nothing is wrong with the behaviour you have described you normally don't type the ".com" part at the end in the process and it will sort itself out.

I am sure Shadow07 would shed some light on this but haven't seen him for a long time... 🙁

Ok, I'll try a little more tomorrow on a fresh brain, I'm not sure if I have to add something in the main server or not.
Perhaps I'm missing some kind of DNS config in the main server.
