OK im making a totally new computer right now but im having a pretty frustating problem.


OK I can NOT get the cdrom to read the windows 2000 CD..... or the Win 98.. or the Win 95...

I have the hd as primary master and the cdrom as secondary master.

I get to
Boot CD?
I hit enter and get
CD BOOT FAIL, INSERT BOOT CD AND HIT ENTER

bleh this sucks I am a total computer building newbie and its probably really obvious what im doing wrong...
 
have you used the Win2K CD before on another computer? my guess is that the somethings wrong with the CD...

what kind of cd-rom do you have?
 
I dont want to insult your intelligence, but when you say secondary master, did you jumper the CDrom drive as "master" and connected it to the second IDE channel ? And not an IDE RAID channel ?

Are you using the orginal CD's or copies ?

Well... what SHOULD I have done

Im using the original win 98,95 and a copy of win 2k
 
It doesnt matter, as long as you have one master per channel, and you do not use the RAID (if you have onboard RAID) for the CD rom drive

You could either do:
Harddisk master on primary IDE channel, CD rom slave on primary IDE channel OR
harddisk master on primary IDE channel, CD rom master on secondary IDE channel

Make sure you jumpered the CD and HD correctly.. dont use &quot;CS&quot; (cable select).
Make sure you connected the IDE cable correctly (in some cases you can misinstall it, but turning it around. The red edge on the cable (pin 1) should always be at the power connector side)

 
here's another suggestion?

your inserting the Win2K CD after installing all the files from the 4 boot diskettes right?

Win2K boots from boot disk #1, not the CD.

but that still doesnt solve the problem of why win98 and win95 won't work. hmmm...

hdd prim master cdrom prim slave connected correctly.

damnit it always gives me this crappy error message

I tried another Cdrom drive.. same result.. how do I make a win 98 boot disk? damn this sux
 
Does your BIOS detect the CD drive?
If it does, you know it must be configured to work and it must be cabled correctly.
If it won't boot direct from the CDROM, try the boot discs, if you don't have them you can download them from Windrivers.com if you look hard enough.
 
OR...when pop the WIN98 CD into another computer select &quot;make boot disk&quot; from the menu window that will pop up after the CD is read. The disk it creats can be used to install WIN98 on any other machine.
