Most people don't even know how to use the features on lower-end cameras. I'm surprised by how many people don't even know how to disable the flash or enable macro mode.

o_O what happens in the macro mode?

For extreme close up.

Wow, you shot those pictures? With an A75? Do you use any attachments?

That's a great job.

Canon S2 IS seems nice, pretty small, 12x optical zoom, image stabilization, 5 megapixel, and flippy-doo LCD.

That said I like my Fuji a lot.

Check out the selector thingy at the Imaging Resource.

See sig.

I love my a95 myself, but if you want full manuel controls try a Nikon d50/d70 or the canon digital rebel, both have received good reviews.

I'll go out on a limb and recommend a Nikon D50. It works a LOT like the F3 SLR that you're used to, but it can also be set to "auto everything" so the Mrs. can use it without too much trouble. Hell, you'll even be able to use a bunch of your old lenses and flashes with it, too.

You can get one for around $850 now, which isn't too much more than a high end point and shoot camera.

yup....if I only had the money would have gotten this one...

Personally I'd recommend a Canon Digital Rebel. It's bulky but as far as I understand it these slrs have full auto modes.
If not some good super zooms are the Panasonic DMC-FZ20 and the Canon Powershot S2 IS.
As for smaller stuff Canon makes decent cameras.

As for Secure Digital Memory for a camera. Check out the Adata 150x at newegg. 22.5mb up and 15mb down.

If you like your F3 so much then stick with D50/D70. Has enough auto modes that the Mrs can use it, plus you'll have manual controls. And if your lenses are AI or later, they'll mount (though they'll only meter if they're P or chipped, not really worth converting if you haven't). The problem with the baby P&S cameras is response time. Pretty much everything is going to feel sluggish to you. Heh and if you ever want to sell your F3, I might know a buyer *wink wink nudge nudge*

Some D70 samples (shameless plug)

Moving from an F3, he's going to hate having only the 1 dial. It's like losing right click.

For closer macros, you can also get lenses for canon cameras.

My good old A40 shot this.

Something more fitting for AT :p

That S2 IS model looks mighty tempting. The reviews are raves, too. Anyone have any firsthand experience with it, or its predecessor?
And does anyone have one for a good price that, um, fell off a truck or something??
Oh, yeah, one more question. In real world terms, how many pics can be taken/stored with the OE card that these cameras come with? Is an upgrade to a larger capacity card usually needed?

you'll definitely want to get a 512MB card, or at least 1GB. i don't even believe that cameras come with cards anymore. you'd probably have to get that yourself.

we actually bought the powershot S2 IS for ourselves. it hasn't arrived yet -- we got it from amazon.com on its release date for $499.99, but then learned that dell had a deal for $382 or so. so my husband returned the amazon one in favor of the dell one. it won't start shipping for another week or so, i believe.

as far as the powershot S1 IS goes, people loved it... and now, with 12x optical zoom, the love is greater. i firmly believe that you'll be VERY satisfied with it.

Is that right? They don't even come with a card? Is something like this what I should be looking for? Or maybe the 1GB version? I mean, are SD cards all pretty much the same?
And while I'm at it, transferring the images from the card to the PC is simply a matter of plugging the camera into any USB port?

Hehe...that sucka is taking a dirt nap with me, whenever that fateful day beckons.
Thanks for all the help, folks. Much appreciated!

I just got a S2 IS this week. So far so good but it seems to get grumpy at times about focusing. I'm still learning though.

As for SD, that UltraII is insanely expensive. Everyone makes 9Write&10read mb/sec cards. You can get get a 1gb SD card for that price. If you're willing to wait for Newegg to get it back in stock they have a 1gb 150x (15+write/22.5read mb/sec) for $62.70 at Newegg.com

Thats the card that I ordered. A few people have gotten the 2gb version and said it works fine with the S2 IS.

I'm also in the market for a digital camera. I've been doing my research, and i really like the Fuji F10 http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuji_finepixf10.asp The reviews all seem to praise its quality, and its ability to take incredible night shots.

My needs for a camera are: compact (fit in pocket), great quality (good for taking shots at parties and other college student places), Battery life (~500 shots for the fuji), and quick enough start up time. This will be my first camera, so I'll be experimenting with manual modes and such.

Anyone have any opinions on this camera? Any other recomendations that fulfill my requirements? thanks.
