Help! Need printer on network

I am brand new to setting up a home wireless network. I have no clue of what to do to set one up correctly. My main mission for this network is for a printer. My dad recenlty bought a Sony Vaio Laptop K-23 with a IEEE 802.11g Wireless LAN Router Access Point. I don't even know what exactly this is. He hooked up a laser printer to it. I have my own desktop computer upstairs. And I was wondering what is the best way to setup a connection so I can print from my upstairs computer to my downstairs printer. Also, I have a dial-up connection if that makes a difference. I talked to an employee at Best Buy and he told me all I needed were two things a Wirless Router and a PCI Adapter CArd for my desktop. I was wondering if this is all I really need or is there more I need to buy.
If the guy at Best BUy is correct about the two things I need, what is the best company to buy. I have Windows XP and I have heard Linksys is not very good with XP. Is -D-link just as good or should I take the chance with Linksys. Thnak you for all your help. I appreciate it.
