Hello everyone, first time posting here.
My PII crashed, yes PII, and I need some recommendations. I need a good motherboard for approx. $100 with firewire, USB's, 10/100/1000, sound,
I was looking at the DFI 865PE Infinity Socket 478 for $99.99. Is it stable?
Should I go for the 865PE chipset or 875P or consider a chipset other than from Intel?
I need to setup this system A.S.A.P.

Thank you in advance.

Are you getting a new cpu?
None of those motherboards you listed will work with your old cpu.

Otherwise I'd recommend looking at the AMD side of things.

Sorry about that.
I forgot to mention that I was also planning to buy a new CPU, RAM, case, etc...
not use my existing CPU.

On the intel side, the 865 chipset will be adequate for usage and mobos may be available for around $100. Read anandtech's 865/875 chipset motherboard shot-out - part 1 in motherboard articles/reviews section.

am i not too late yet around here? anyway, 865 and 875 chipset family from intel are very good chipsets of their generation. 875 is a bit more high end than 865 and also more expensive of course. i guess any brand would do, but just avoid intel brands itself should you plan to overclock your system later as intel mobos don't provide such options. for other chipsets in intel platforms, radeon rs300 or rs350 is also very good and a very good competitor to 865 family of intel.

for amd platforms, i suggest going for nforce2 or even nforce3 chipsets and no other... :)

I'd go with an 865 mobo like the P4P800 deluxe (not sure of the price anymore though)
I used a few at work, they seem to be great (especially for features)

Foxconn makes a few 865 boards for under $100 that is loaded with features and works great (minus overclocking features).
