Hi. I have a external 200 gig where I store my music, pictures,dv webcam vids and pretty much anything I have, including backups of games because I like to keep them in original casing.

Now I cam home from college and I noticed I forgot the AC adapter for my external. BUMMER! But to do things, I really need to be able to acess it..especially If I want to listen to music at all, etc So unhooked my external from its case and nhooked my 80 gig backup drive (Tho regretfully I recently cleaned it all up so I haven't had a chance to load up all the new copies of the pictures and dv movies and whatnot) and temporarily plugged in the good ol 200 b/c I wanted to show my brother some stuff...but it won't acess!!!

windows took like 5 minutes between when the "windows" logo went away and the time I could finally enter my password. I was like "werd...."

and then when i went to acesss my computer I noticed extremely lag and non responsiveness byt the external.after 10-15 seconds i CAN browse around...but when I click on my hdd I tired to acesss my drive (J:) and i got this messagE:

___________________ (For some reason i can't access the drive right now i will do it later when the message pops up)

so then i go to control panel, administriative "powers" and see if windows recognizes the disk and for some reason it recognizes it fine and it says its status is "healthy". If so then why can I not access the drive normally? Is there some problem at all that anyone can think of? Initially i remembered I'm using a Promise ATA 100 contrl card that didnt support the cable select option so I switched it to primary. That didn't solve it. Then i got another cable and I plugged it into the IDE2 of the controller card and it still didn't fix the problem (i used to be able to exchange from the hard drive to the controller card without a problem but that was when i was debating on making it an internal backup or external backup)
I've check the jumpers a 1000 times. I' mthinking of going and buying another external case but those are slightly expensive
Can anyone help me or have any idea? Some of that stuff like pictures and the videos I'm reallllllly worried about. I have projects and stuff that I had backuped, but as of the laste 48 hours didn't spent time to rebackup everything. Music can be had again, as can easily ripping a few cds...but its the other stuff i'm worried

If windows has no problem seeing the drive, then why can't I acess it?

im assuming you have xp pro.....
run/cmd
diskpart
list volume [might be volumes]
see if the drive shows up in there

Okay some more info:

i'm using the WD diagnostic tools. though i downloaded the slightly older version first (300k?) b/c i'm on 56k and the newer version is taking a while at 3.5 megs or so....so I'm using this just to check

but in "physical drives" my drive appears and it says it passes the SMART test

but the intersting thing is below it where it lists "logical drive" my drive appears and likes J: but it doesn't list ANY OTHER INFORMATION

so I guess there is a problem in the recognition of it as a logical drive. Does this help at all?

edit:

okay when i try to acess the drive i get:

the semaphore time out period has expired[/v]

does that help at all? also i tried going to site and choosing the laternate jumper settings for single but i still can't get it to work

I think its a jumper problem...

Sounds like the symptoms when a WD HDD is on IDE channel by itself, but has the jumper to "Master".

All WDs I have had require the jumper to be removed when the HDD is an IDE by itself.

im pretty sure external drives dont have jumpers....may be wrong, ive never used one

i didnt feel like rereading the entire OP....did you try restarting with the drive hooked up?

From reading his posts I thought he had a regular HDD in an enclosure?

Try putting it on its own cable, at the end, and remove the jumper entirely -- I think that's how Western Digital drives like it.

Just a thought.. double check to make sure it's an 80 wire cable, not an older 40 wire.

Or try a diff cable in case the original is borked

Try a diff power connector. Had a bad connector from the psu>HDD give me all kinds of wierd probs once.
