Personally, I'm in favor of keeping it simple. Some salt, some pepper, a little garlic, and a charcoal grill. (For convenience, garlic salt can be substituted for garlic.) Season the steak before putting it on the grill. Leave the steak on the fire until juices start to seep through it and accumulate on the top, then flip the steak over and when juice starts seeping out the top again, take it off the grill and eat it.

use something salty to bring out flavor. Use something vinegary to break down the muscle fibers and tenderize the meat.
Other than that, be creative and improvise. Italian dressing works well by itself in a pinch. Marinate for 20 minutes or more, then grill / saute / etc

PERFECT STEAK RECIPE:

preheat oven to 500.
bring steak to room temp, rub a little olive oil onto each side, as well as kosher salt and freshly ground pepper.
heat your cast iron skillet until just smoking, pour in a litle (very little) canola oil.
sear steaks 2 min each side, pop into oven for 3 minutes. remove, let sit, tented w/foil 5 min. Perfect.

ovens are the best way to cook steaks, because it's easiest to control the temperature.

edit: yes, sorry glen, you did post the oven method first, but mine's just a lil bit different.

For BBQ..I've always liked plain old SOYA SAUCE. It gives the meat a nice colour and doesn't overwhelm a good rib steak. I even use it on pork chops or chicken.
Edit. To cook on a BBQ, fire it up and let it heat up real hot for about 10 mins on high, then put the steak on the grill and don't play with it and keep turning it over. Let it cook on the first side untill the blood starts bubbling up through the top, then flip it over and let it cook on the other side for no more than a few mins. This will give you a nice medium steak.
