Help!!! Need Computer help ASAP - Inlaws on phone

Long story, but my father-in-law has taken it upon himself to upgrade his ECS K7SEM from a 700mhz Duron to a 1.2ghz. He pried (!!!) the processor off before calling me to find out that there was a lever to unlock the processor to remove it. Now he's got the new processor on but the system won't boot (no great surprise). I've told him to replace it with the old processor first to see if he's killed the board, if it still works: Can someone tell me if/what jumpers or BIOS changes are necessary prior to booting up with the faster processor for it to be recognized?

:Q
I would be even surprised if that works still. 😛

i don't much about AMD boards, but i did find a suppot forum that's up your alley. scroll down a few and you will find one guy talking about upgrading to a 1.2 GHz Athlon. wish you luck man. wish i could be more of help. here ya go: K7SEM Support

most boards that run those types of processors have auto detect features and you don't have to change any jumpers or BIOS settings

It will boot but it may not be at the right settings in the bios. Pretty sure that chip and board are dead my friend.

Thanks for the help, guys. I was pretty sure he smoked the board when he mentioned the words "screwdriver", "pry", and "processor" in the same sentence. I've been out to the ECS site already, the manual was some help in identifying where the release lever was for the board but other than that it's pretty dry. I'd been out to the forum already, it doesn't look like there are any ECS personnel on it, just a bunch of end users complaining about one problem or another without any resolutions. Oh, well. I think he just made a $200 'oops'.

Sounds like my enccounters with my grandfather when I go their to 'fix' his satellite. Lets see, one time I stopped by and turn the sucker on for him. Next I had connect the cables to the right input because he claims he's read in the book that you have to pull the wire out every once it a while. So he does but doesn't plug it back into the correct port. Newest mess up, somehow he changed the code on the remote so he couldn't change the channels or anything. Gotta give him credit though, he's 84 and won't stop trying to learn this stuff. Thank god he doesn't want a computer, I think he'd be dangerous...

Ha! More likely he does all that just to see his grandson. 🙂

All he watches is The History Channel and History International. My grandmother says he'll watch the same program 4 times. Its always on when I go there, Channel 269. You can talk to him, he'll see someone on the TV and yell "God damn Germans" and start talking about the war and his time as a POW. He's a riot though. We used to tape The Sopranos for him and would give him a block of 6-10 episodes. The next time we'd see him, he'd be all like "Filth, what filth. I don't watch that sh-t". Then my grandmother will chime in "Yeah filth, he only watched them all 3 times."

hahaha germans hahaha

Good News: He didn't kill the board or the processor when he pried it off. Although it wouldn't boot with the new processor, I told him to replace it with the old one to see if the board and original processor still worked, and it did!

Bad News: Despite my emphatic instructions to the contrary, he decided that since he was just going to power it on for a few seconds, he didn't need to bother with the fan. He said it started 'showing words on the screen', but before it made it to Windows it started SMOKING!!!!! and he decided it would be good to power it off again. Then he called me back to ask how to fix it. Now he really does have a big "OOPS" on his hands.

Since they are both 100 mhz bus, should be a drop in replacement...but you might need to set ESCD to update to get it to work.
