Do you even know how to change your own oil yet? 😛 I think it may be a big undertaking buying a piece of crap and figuring out how to make it good without some serious help!

but thats about it. heh.

and thats what im looking for is a big undertaking. im gonna have to find people to flood with questions but thats what i like doing. when you wanna learn sh*t, you have to start somewhere. im mechanically inclined, but never have done much with cars yet.

How did you come to that conclusion in 2 minutes?

I scanned the whole page and all i saw was what looked like a giant dog chew toy on a stand. i was hoping to get something more along the lines of a whole car

Uh...that's just someone's project journal. The complexity of the project depends on what condition the car(s) you buy are in. You are really going to need a lot of help.

I recommended an MG for the sole purpose that A LOT of people have done restorations on them before and there are TONS of resources on the web and in print.
 
FWIW- working on a motorcycle would probably be a cheaper initial and ongoing investment. Dunno if that would appeal to you, but just a thought. There are a crapload of potentially nice bikes out there in the $500-$1500 range.
 
Im probably just gonna go with the Beetle, ive done a lot of work on them in the past and theyre a$$-cheap. ill look for an old mustang before i jump on anything, but ive looked before and had no luck
 
YART? and fausto, motorcycle would definitely be more confenient to work on but i know many people that have died or near-died on them and i dont think i could bring myself to ride it. which would suck

Chop = Shortening the pillars so the roof line is lowered
 
Well, you've got lots of choices. The 87-93 mustang might cost slgihtly mor than $2k to start with, but parts for it are a lot cheaper than many other cars. There's also no shartage of parts/shops/knowledgeable people when it comes to them. Same goes for the older mustangs from the 60s and 70s. You can probably find one under $2k, but it'll be more work to get it in decent shape.

The bug is a good choice; cheap and lots of parts avaialble, but it's air-cooled which means that not everything in there will be applciable to most other cars.

Then there's tons of old chevy's around. There are plenty of parts for chevelles and such around, kinda like the mustang.

You could also look into trucks. The ford F-series goes WAY back and you can build some pretty cool old trucks with them.

Then there's also the imports, but i don't know as much about them.

Keep in mind how much work this is goig to be. Here are some pics from when I did my engine swap All we did was pull out the old motor, assemble the new one, and drop it back in the car, and that was 3 weekends and about $4000. Body and paint work takes a lot longer than mechanical work, and you'll also have the interior to deal with. You'll want to pick a car that you can find new seats and things for if the ones you get are torn up.
 
thats true. but i rock the sewing machines and have watched way too many fix-a-car shows and could probably re-upholster myself. i havent looked into the old F series yet, but i will.
 
Another vote for VW, but I suggest a Type 3 Squareback
They weigh more than a Bug, but are much more solid and a LOT roomier. They are also easier to lower than a bug. (the front axle beam doesn't need to be cut and welded to lower it like the Bug, though some people go the cheap and cheesy route of just removing some of the springs...).

The engines are VERY cheap to rebuild and parts as a whole are cheap and easy to come by. They don't call these the peoples car for nothing either, they are EASY to work on.

As ugly as my Type 3 is, it still turns a lot of heads, and CHICKS dig it! 😉

They can be bought cheap, theyre just about some of the simplest cars to work on and despite their boxy look, they (can) haul ass.
By the way, I am doing the same thing you want to do, also similar to the website above, but with a MUCH smaller budget.
