HELP! My sys keeps hanging

I just installed a new 80 gb hard drive and installed win xp. I really love xp but now my HD has been hanging at random times. I think it gets particularly worse when I'm on the net but I haven't really used other non net programs for a long duration. There are times when I turn on my computer and it would freeze imediately after win xp is loaded. I would have to press the reset button in order to restart the computer.

Any help would be appreciated. BTW, I'm running a duron 700 with 512 ram. I can provide more info if needed.

Check the event logs and see if it has any errors. They will be marked by red x's. I don't know how much you know about XP so maybe I should say that the "Event Viewer" is in the administrative tools.

thanx Peacekeeper100,

I never knew about the event viewer. It showed that I was having problems with the acpi mode of win xp. I upgraded my bios and now the event viewer shows it's all fixed. So far there is no hanging <knock on wood>.
