Help! My PS2 died!

I got my PS2 back today and I've discovered a vicious problem. It won't read PS2-formatted discs! It can read audio discs and PS1 discs, but whenever I put in a PS2 disc [UPDATE: DVDs also don't work!], the drive makes a weird sound (spinning up) and the PS2 either says "The disc cannot be read" or will show up in the browser, but won't start the game. This has never happened before, and it's a PS2 slim.

Help!

UPDATE: So I called Sony CSR about my problem and since I don't have the original receipt, they want to charge me $45 to replace this thing.

One thing before I take the plunge, though - I've read that changing the angle of the laser may fix the problem, but it's not guaranteed. It also requires removing the Void Warranty seal, which means that if I do open it up, Sony probably won't replace my system. Should I take a chance and open it up, or just spend $45 to give it to $ony?

That's a common PS2 complaint. Look up PS2 disc cannot be read on google and there are instructions for calibrating it. It worked for one of mine but not the other.

Same thing happened to my first PS2. Got that fixed then the stupid tray wouldn't eject after a few months. Your best bet is just to get a new PS2 (or a refurbed\used one).

Need a new laser. Common problem with the ps2. Better off ditching it and getting a modded xbox so you can play all of your games off the hdd ;)

Vicious problem? Who do you think you are, Joe Buck?

I sold my regular PS2, slim PS2, and X360 before they got the disc read problem.

BTW, if you bought it from Costco, exchange it for a new one.

Is it a problem even with the Slim PS2? I know the old one (with the motorized tray) had a bunch of problems, but I figured they would've fixed it in the update...

damn $ony.

I found a Q&A with my problem, so I'm gonna try what they suggested. Thanks!

Yeah, basically no matter whether or not I fix this problem, $ony is still on my sh!t list. I'll probably never buy anything from them again, just because I already hated them before I got my PS2 (mostly for DDR purposes).

Thanks for reminding me. I used to be able to A almost every 9 footer in existence, but I haven't played in a loooong time. I'll upload a vid when I deem my performance acceptable :D. That said, where can I upload vids?

Update: PS2 will not play DVD movies. I'm guessing there's something wrong with the laser level or voltage, but I'm not sure...

I've had this PS2 for maybe a year and a half. Is it safe to assume that it's out of warranty? It's a Slimline from Best Buy.

Yup, very common. Surprising that Sony didn't fix it when they designed the slim version. Oh wait, no it isn't.

This pisses me off. Is there nothing else I can do to fix it myself? PS2 plays only CDs, not DVDs.

Yes, there is, someone already suggested that. There is information all over the web on how to fix it. You have to open it up and move a little white gear around until you find the spot where it'll read every type of disc.

Unfortunately, I've already looked this problem up. This is the slimline PS2, which does not have the white gear. If it did, I would've already opened it up and messed with it.

I'm also not entirely sure how to open this thing up, or how close the layout is to the original PS2.

So I called Sony CSR about my problem and since I don't have the original receipt, they want to charge me $45 to replace this thing.

Tough call there... What's a new one going for, $129? I think I saw them on sale for $99 at Target. IIRC, the "fix" was not a permanent fix with the old PS2s, you were likely to have to do it again.

I'd tell them where they can stick their defective systems and buy a GameCube or Xbox.

I'd like to do that, but I already have games for this thing, and I'm not a very rich person. Besides, now I'm really only keeping it for DDR, which is best on PS2.

This is a slim PS2, so I guess it really isn't an "old" PS2. But yes, a new one is $129.

Yeah I know, but I think the same would apply to the slim PS2... you could very likely have to fix it again in 6 months.
