HELP! My new system is flaky

I bought a system from cyberpowerpc.com

It was priced well and I got to basically customize the parts I bought. So I figure hey why not.

Well..... First thing I notice is that the software that comes with the board reports high voltages on the 12+ and 5+ range. I think this is just some strange sideffect because FIC says not to worry about it and that the board doesn't really support voltage monitoring. Weird...

Next my hdd starts to click. It started during boot and shutdown mostly. It sounds like the hdd head smacking against something and then sorta bouncing around. When it makes the sound the hdd light sometimes pegs (depending on if your actually using the hdd at that moment or not) and the system chokes for a second.

So I replace the hdd and in a couple days the 2nd hdd starts doing the same thing. I replace the power supply thinking that might be a problem because of the monitoring software which I later find out is not supposed to be installed. I am using parts that cyberpower has sent me.

I put the original hdd back in and booted in DOS and did fdisk just to see if it would still make that noise .. and it did. So its not a windows thing.

I put in a 3rd drive and tried to install Windows 2000 and after it rebooted to finish the setup it loads up and then goes to some blue screen that says something totally worthless like

Hardware Failure

Contact your vendor for details

yeah right... like the vendor will have any idea what thats supposed to mean.

So it looks like I will have to send this back. THe system is a Duron 650 with 128 megs ram and a FIC AZ11 board. Both hdd are WD ... which I personally don't like, but still they should get the job done. So does this sound like a bad mobo ?

I doubt the CPU would do this... but with such a great error message that windows 2000 generates I have no idea what is really going on.

Did you check http://www.resellerratings.com/c.html before ordering? Their rating kind of sucks, so I guess the chances of you being unhappy are pretty high.

I wouldn't wish an FIC motherboard on my worst enemy, but I am unfamiliar with their Duron/Tbird products.

Personally, I would send the POS back to them and get a refund while you are in your 30 day or whatever return period. Either build one yourself or buy one from a reputable builder, there are several who regularly post here and will support their products. Sometimes saving a couple hundred $$ is the worst thing you can do.

Edit: Can't spell

Well... when I bought my system the FIC was the only Duron board out. Yeah I could build my system, but cyberpower basically had all the stuff I wanted and at lower price than I could get it seperately.

They will charge me a 15% restocking fee I imagine......

thats about $150 bucks :(

hehe currently I have an extra PS and hdd that they sent me

maybe I can get some more replacement parts

then just never talk to them again. I figure thats fair.

For $150 you might as well just run out and buy an MSI K7T Pro; they are very stable.

Remove your mobo and check on the underside to make sure that none of the mobo tray standoffs are shorting a trace to ground. Are you using an ATA66 cable with the 66 controller. Do you have the blue connector plugged into the mobo ?? BTW the AZ11 is not a bad board, just doesn't have all the bells a whistles of the ASUS or ABIT. (plus the AZ11 is the first board to be approved by AMD for 1.1 ghz)

At the time the FIC was the only thing out. Neither drive is AT 66.

I think its a bad hdd controller on the motherboard.

I will order myself a abit with raid :)

as a replacement until the FIC replacement gets here then I can build a 2nd system :)

By the way... on the newer durons you have to reconnect those leads to change the multiplyer. What would I use to do that and where could I buy it.

conductive pen or sometimes a pencil if you arent missing any fid pins. Conductive pens are hard to find in rural areas, and I dont know of any vendors
