HELP!! My monitor died :(

Title says it all, my wife was using the computer yesterday morning... she stand up to see the kids and after she came back, the monitor had a black screen. She thought it was the power saver feature of the OS, but it didn't come back to life. I had to wake up and check it, and in effect it was dead. We restarted the compuetr the hard way, but the monitor was still black (power LED was OFF). I tried to check the connection to the computer and to the power outlet, both are OK. I even connected the monitor by itself inot a power outlet and it is still dead.

This is a MagView 986M (VM900E), 19 inches CRT. When you connect the monitor to the power otulet, you always hear a "click" meaning it got power, regardless of the On/OFF button. I no longer hear that "click" when connecting the monitor.

I already tried checking for the fuse in the monitor, which is fine (so you know I already opened it). No seals were broken, so warranty should still apply (I need to find the card). Nothing seems burned inside.

What can I do??? I could just get another one, but I would like at least to try some fixes.

Thanks for the help.

If you're within warranty, it's definitely best to just have them replace it for you. CRT repairs are a tricky prospect, and you can run a really good risk of giving yourself a nasty shock if you open up the monitor any further. If you're not a profesionally qualified CRT technician, don't take the chance. Just get a warranty replacement, it's what warranties are for. 🙂

Just go with the warrenty if it still applies. And if that doesn't work buying a new one would most likely be your best bet. I looked into having a monitor repaired awhile back (it was out of warrenty) and the price to have it wasn't worth it to me as opposed to just buying a new one. Especially since mnitors are much cheaper now.

Thanks for the advice. I got the monitor in 2000 black friday from best buy. I was checking the proview site, and they say parts sold through best buy/ circuit city carry only one year warranty.... I still neeed to find my warranty card when I get home. I don't have receipt, but I have the serial number and a label in the bacj says clearly "Made in Taiwan. August 2000". Do you think that would be enough to claim the warranty???

thanks again.

It shouldn't matter where it was bought from, if it's retail you should get the full warranty. Best Buy does have their own extended service plans, but if your monitor has a 4 year warranty, the BB 4 yr ex service plan doesn't do you any good anyway. Look into the warranty length, I know my Viewsonic has a 3 yr warranty. If you're in warranty I'd just turn it in for them to replace.

Well, I called Proview (the maker of my sh!tty magview). The CSR was nice and helpful, and accepted that my monitor still has warranty left.... so far so good. Then I ask for a replacement as I am still under warranty, and he says that the warranty covers repair only (replacement if a repair is not possible). He also pointed that the warranty is split depending how many years the monitor has been working. If the monitor has been working lees than one year, they cover everything (parts, labor and CRT). If the monitor is over one year old, they cover parts and CRT, but no labor. If the monitor is over 2 years, they only cover parts.... 🙁

Because I am already in the third year, they would cover the parts only. He also mentioned that the labor is a "modest" flat rate of $95..... if you add the shipping, that means that I better buying a new one and selling this POS as scrap.

Thanks for all the advices, I am getting a new one (no magview/proview for sure). Do you know how much can I sell a dead monitor for??? I still want to work fixing this one, just as hobby.... so any suggestion is appreciated.

thanks again

Alex
