I was using my laptop last night...and this morning when I turned it on...it said "disk read error".

I tried booting of winXP cd and it said no drive present...when using a boot disk, it said my C: did not exist.

Is my hardrive dead? If so...is it going to be hard to get it replaced?

What lappy do you have? Anyways, most are designed to allow easy access to ram, HDD, and PCI expansion card if it has one (mine does). You should be able to find the instructions for how to get to your HDD (some have the HDD icon right on the access panel) so you can see if the data/power cable somehow came loose. If it all checks out and the drive is toast then its as simple as replacing a desktop HDD on many models, on my 900z and my bro's Dell it's cake! HTH :) BTW, completely off-topic, did you know a Punisher movie is being made? :p

Thanks for the info Punisher :) I will check the manual for my Compaq Armada 7400 (PII-333) tonight when I get home. Is it common to replace laptop hardrives with desktops?

BTW: I didn't know about the Punisher movie but that sounds pretty cool! Do you know who's playing the lead role?

Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse you brudda, what I meant was that it's just as easy to install your notebook drive as it is to install a desktop HDD (actually easier) not that you could put the full size drive into the notebook. Here's the manual for your notebook PDF manual and the HDD removal and replacement is in chapter5 ( 5.9 to be exact )and it's definitely cake to replace it :)

About the Punisher flick, All I've heard is rumors flyin' around on who'll be Punny, Thomas Jane keeps comin' up but they haven't announced it yet. They say it''ll be hardcore and true to the character and most definitely not for the kids :Q:D

if it really is like you said then its probably a dead hd. It seems like a pretty old laptop so the final day for the hd probably has come.
