Help. My I think my video card died....

Well. It started with subtle issues. I was getting crashes and BSODS that listed an issue with NV4_disp and another weird file called something like Nvcclocpxxx. Today when I was using my PC, I got another crash. After a restart I immediately noticed blue lines going vertically across my screen. These lines persisted during POST, not just in Windows. There were some garbled characters and artifacts on screen as well.

I pulled out an old GeForce 7300, installed, and sure enough the syspem got into windows with no issues whatsoever. No blue lines, no crashes! Been using the PC for hours now with no problems. I am assuming my video card is dead?

If this is the case, does anyone know if EVGA will honor the lifetime warranty more than 3 years after purchase? I heard they only replace the card if the user registered the card immediately after purchase. I never registered... Am I SOA?

Finally if I do have to by a new video card, what is the most "bang for my buck" video card available right now for around $200 or less? Looks like the 4890 is a good pick atm, but are there other choices?

I looked into the 260GTX-275 cards from nvidia, and the price difference is quite significant! Back when I was buying my 8800GTS there was no competition from ATI not in performance or price. Rigth now, it looks like the tables have turned. If I'll be buying a new card right now, I need it to "last" me at least a year or until DX11 becomes truly mainstream in games. So what are my options? Shall I go with nvidia again or ati? I'm not really a fanboy. I usually go with best price/performance ratio.

I am playing on a 23.5 inch 1080p monitor. At max res.

It sounds like your video card has died if putting in a 7300 resolved everything.

Can't beat a 4890 for $194

Or a XFX 4870 1GB for 149.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814150394

Much better warranty for the XFX of course but performs slower.

Lol I paid CAD $295 for mine back in January and it was recently on sale for CAD$165 at newegg.ca. Damn the 4890s...they've eroded the value of the 4870s. :)

assuming the 8800GTS 640mb in your sig is the card you are currently using, i would recommend picking up a 4890 at current pricing. newegg has an HIS model for $189.99 with a promo code today + free shipping, and an XFX with double lifetime warranty for 199.99. definitely the best deal price/performance wise right now, especially with the cheapest recommendable GTX275 on newegg still going for $250

ed: i found a similar theme across tiger direct, mwave, and zipzoomfly as well. the cheapest GTX275 i found was $225 on tigerdirect, with all the stores selling HD4890s at $190-215ish for the HIS model

ed2: hell, you can get an HD4850x2 2GB for $250 http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102809

that thing will beat the shit out of a GTX285 in any game for $50-80 less and it costs the same as a GTX275

This might sound stupid, but is there any way I can try and see what was wrong with my card? Any way to tell? Maybe I should take off the top cover? There was no burning smell or anything like that... I am quite surprised actually. Every card I ever owned by evga lasted for many years and I never had to throw any one of them out. :(

Is not EVGA's fault, lately, many 8800 series of cards, are dying unexplicably. There's a thread were a guy fixed his 8800 Ultra putting it in a conventional oven for 8 or 10 minutes.

http://www.hardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1421792

my 8800gtx died a little over 3 months ago. went ahead and ordered a new video card because i figured the card is completely dead without having to pay to send it in and get it repaired because i didnt register it when i bought it initially(dumb, i know...). anyway, i am posting this message running off my 8800gtx!

i got the idea from another forum, because some guy in the UK bought a dead 8800gtx off of ebay that had red vertical lines through the screen...my card had the same symptoms...one day it locked up on me, rebooted, then locked up on me even quicker...rebooted, red lines all over the screen and windows wouldnt even boot. i tried the card in a friends computer with the same result...

sooooooo, i removed all bits from the card including the i/o shield and placed it gpu side down with the card raised up on 3 sides by tiny balls of aluminum foil and placed it on a very thin cookie sheet. i preheated the oven to 385f, put the card in and waited around 8-10 minutes. i carefully removed the cookie sheet and placed it on top of the oven to cool down naturally. waited about an hour and voila! =D

There's also a link to youtube that gives you a visual explain of what to do, is very easy to do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7jUqoKVY-k

If you are fond of your card, you should give it a try, what can you loose?

CRAZY! But hey, I'll give it a try if EVGA refuses to replace my card. A friend of mine had his 8600 die on him a few months ago, and evga honored the warranty despite the fact that he NEVER REGISTERED, and only did so on the day when he decided to RMA the card. He got an 8800GT as a replacement!

Thank you for your advice. It gives me a chance at least. ;)

Even more the reason why the manufacturer should give you a new one.

UPDATE: I just got an email from evga. The bastards rejected my RMA claim saying it's outside of 1 year warranty. This is ridiculous, because my card has a lifetime warranty on it, as listed during time of purchase. I sent them another letter, and hopefully they will reconsider. I am probably never buying video cards from evga ever again. They are not what they used to be. Their cards are overpriced compared to other manufacturers, and apparently they are liars too... :(

Well.. Whadda ya know.. IT WORKED! I am simply ASTONISHED that something like this is even possible. I resurrected a card that was pretty much dead and it works like it's brand new. Thank you soooo much for your help and advice! As always, AT is the best. (and so are you)

You apparently didn't register your card within 30 days of purchase. It says quite clearly that you need to do this to receive the limited lifetime warranty.

Glad to hear baking solved your problems, though.

But the thing is, my friend had his card die on him too, and he never registered it either, yet EVGA replaced his card no problem. And he RMA'd it way after his 1 year from purchase. This is not the 1st time I heard of EVGA replacing people's unregistered cards. EVGA's actions and decisions make no sense. I admit that I am to blame here for not registering, but I cant see why they cant bend the rules a little for their loyal customers it's not like I didn't pay as much money for my video card as those who registered theirs.

Also, it doesn't say anything clearly about the warranty. There is a tiny line of text on the back in fine print about this. I only noticed it when my RMA claim was denied... (Yes I know I know... I was being naive, and I should always read things in fine print)

Oh, and thanks. I am so glad this thing worked.

Sorry, but it's their prerogative to waive policy or not. Can't really hold it against them if they don't. Maybe you weren't as much of a kissass as your friend on the phone with support, or maybe the rep you talked to was having a bad day. Unless you follow warranty instructions to the letter, it's going to be a tossup what kind of assistance you receive. Sucks.

LOL, baking a video card and it fixes the problem, what does that say about the way these video cards are put together? Pretty shitty.
