step one: Cuff friend upside head
step two: Repeat step one until anger subsides, or friend understands the stupidity of the act

On some monitors, there's a "Degauss" option, which is supposed to "undo" the effects of a magnet. I've never had reason to try it to see how well it works, but I know the option is there (I hope I never have to try it out).

I hope it works for you, and I hope that you have that setting.

If you don't have a deguass button, or you can't find it your monitor's menu, turn your monitor on and off several times (wait 3-4 seconds between turning it on after turning it off) most monitors deguass themselves after 7 times.

BurntKooshie is correct (about the degauss). Almost all modern monitors have some form of manual degauss option.

Of course, if your monitor is the rare exception you can just turn it off for about 24 hours and it should come back in good condition.

Most monitors also normally degauss on power up.

while we are on the subject can anyone solve my tv problem? My idiotic friend decided to place a magnet object on top of my old (about 13 years old) sony tv and ever since it's been acting weird. The screen continuously flashes and the sound hardly ever works... every now and than I will get it to work from presses power on power off like 30 times or I after having it on for a while it sometimes fixes itself... any idea how I can fix the problem permanently?

Madcows: Get it to a good TV shop and see if they can fix it. Most of
these things can be repaired if the dealer won´t try to sell you a new one..

Nikster: Glad it worked. Now hire a hitman. I hear Martin Blank is available...

Madcowz, the only thing a magnet will do to a TV is mess up the colors on the picture and that is easly fixed by degaussing. If you have trouble with the sound or picture popping on and off, you have other problems that just happened to start at the same time he laid the magnet on the TV. The magnet would not have caused the kind of problem you are describing. Sounds like it is about to die. Sorry :(

Banging the television often works, really, but it also knackers tube quality eventually. 13 years is a long time for a TV... you may have "dry wood" where the solder lines to the speakers are eroded? Causes intermittent sound.
I don't know a whole lot about electronics but I know basically how monitors work and I've had three big screen 2nd hand television bargains... what kind of magnetic object was on the TV? If your geometry is going or flickering too I'd say it's a sure sign to ditch the sucker... the problems recur after a while with the old TVs especially the biggies... but I'm a hypocrite because I too extend the life of my TV beyond most people's tolerance because I was it so rarely. My current TV changes dimensions after wobbling a bit each time I watch it. The power switch doesn't work, I have to turn it on at the wall socket. The first four channels are knackered so Channel 1 is at 5 and so on... every couple of months you'll turn it on and no picture. Bang it on the top hard enough and it wakes up. Still the picture is basically good and it works ;)

Thanks for bringing up TV's. In fact, I believe most fairly new TV's are supposed to degauss each time they are powered on?

OK, my g/f has a decent TV...s-vid input, etc. But, she's got it magnetized...and it has stayed with her during a move, and I'm really getting tired of watching DVD's with weird colors. Suggestions?

1. It doesn't have a degauss feature (the auto must be broken).
2. Turning it off/on doesn't work.
3. Leaving it off/unplugged for 3 days doesn't work.
4. With a 4" car speaker magnet, I can move most of the discoloration off the screen, but it comes back, and i can never get it out of a couple corners.
5. I haven't tried whacking it upside the head. I'll have to wait until she's not there to do that. ;)
6. I don't want to spend the $$$'s for a major degausser/electromagnet. Hmm...I wonder if you can rent 'em?

Hmmm...I do have a couple 30 year old speakers with 10" subs that I could take over, but that's kind of a pain, and not sure if the magnets are still strong.

Anyone know of a common household item I could use to degauss with? I could plug something into an extension cord and swirl it around?

Car battery charger (yes, this would be practical--2 amp trickle charger)? Car battery? toaster? microwave?

13 Years old is too old. Buy a new TV. It'll probably cost comparably to the cost of fixing it.

hey all,

well, since we are on the T.V. topic. I have a question. My friend just got a 46" 16:9 HDTV. we are wondering what method of connecting the DVD player to the TV is best, S-Vid or Component? we have been told that S-vid is better because the component vid by-passes the comb filter in the TV. but we have heard that component is better. anyone tell me why one is better than the other?

thanx

S-Vid or Component
Component because it reduces artifacts and color errors by minimizing the number of video signal format conversions between the film source and your tv. S-video will indeed go through the comb filter, but this will cause some noise. Try it both ways & see it for yourself. It won't be a huge change, but it will be noticeable.

As for Svideo versus Component, the answer is easy... It depends which one has the better comb filter, I mean your TV versus the DVD.
