Help my first build. $800 budget w/ 17'' lcd

I'm going to build a new system for a friend but after reading many guides here i get headache. I want to build a cheap system with main emphasis on the 17'' lcd (~$350 right?) The Amd 2500+ is a very popular choice I've seen around here and easily oc to 3200+. So what else should I build around it for complete stability and long system lifetime? What mobo? Dvd burner is a must (already chose Nec Nd-2500a) I don't want to overspend anything on extra features because he doesn't know much about computer. Please help. Any input is appreciated.

and if u really want a dvd burner too thats alrdy 500 bucks

U need windows and a case and ram. i think that is more then 800 alrdy

for gaming dont go LCD, they are too expensive and have horrid image quality compared to crts. You can get crts for real cheap, then a pretty decent rig with the money left. but 400 bucks for a rig wont get you nothing good.

$419. 20ms Hydis panel. Plays every game I've tried well enough to forget you're on an LCD.

The point is that on a budget of $800, $419 on a monitor is not leaving anything for the system.

If he dropped the dvd burner it would work. Board $65, CPU $75, 512 Ram $75 (less if he uses HD), 40GB HD $60 (less if he uses HD), some half decent vid card for ~$125. Otherwise, I agree.

Thanks alot for the inputs. Maybe I'll ask my friend for another monitor option other than 17'' lcd. I think he likes lcd too much that he wants to get a new system. He's not a gamer. What mobo will allow me to oc a retail 2500+ (unlocked) to 3200+ and if locked what ram, cooling (stock hsf ok?) (not mobile cause i want warranty for him, play safe) Should I even consider OCing at all? Seems like oc 2500+ to 3200+ is the most economic plan. He doesn't know much and I don't want to be bother too much fixing of any unforeseen problems. Maybe I'll drop the dvd burner too.

You'll want the 1801fp if you get a Dell. Probably your best bet, especially if you need an OS.

If he doesn't game and "doesn't know much" and you don't want to be his lifelong tech support, get a Dell, dude!

but if you must get an lcd try to get something with 16ms or 12ms response time
get your money's worth

$50 Seagate 80GB 8MB cache @ best buys right now
$80 PC3200 512MB Corsair from fry's
$30 Case from mwave or pcclub
$90 NEC 2500A burner from pricegrabber

$650 total so far

$150 for MB, CPU, HSF, Vid Card, shipping, tax, & incidentals

I'm thinking integrated video and a combo deal from either
Fry's XP2200 and Abit VA-10 $69
Mwave XP 2800 (was $80, now $150 before $50 MIR) and Shuttle K7VME
