Help my ears

The HD4870X2 is super loud while gaming. It probably doesn't help at all that I have my case to the right of me and it has air holes. I started to wonder what I could do to try and keep the noise down, thought maybe a new case could help a bit. Anyone have recommendations?

I checked out silentpcreview.com but is it me or is their site as organized as scrambled eggs? For a site based on silent pc parts, you would think they would at least have a top 10 in each catagory with dBA ratings or something. Instead Ih ave to click on each review ? Myabe i r just 2 dumb

I would have to say the HD4870X2 was a hot card to begin with and will require tons of cooling. However, you're not really going to find many aftermarket solutions for that since it's a dual chip card. You might be able to get away with turning down the fan speed of the card when it hits full 3D, but you will likely have heat issues.

There are various things you can do to quiet any system, however you might be limited to a degree based on the parts you have. First thing would be to let us know what you are working with overall,... what case? what kind of components?

Silentpcreview.com has great forums for making things quiet. Their articles are not updated very often and the site does have a somewhat mangled organization in my opinion (but it is still one that I will use a lot as I have become very adverse to working with noisey systems anymore - it saves a headache or two).

Just some things offhand to consider, you might see about turning down the fan speed on the card if you can create overall adequate cooling in the case,... that way you would still have decent temps for the gpu.

If you have a side hole and not using it,.. see what difference it makes with covering it up with something easy and easy to remove,... packaging tape.

Dampening materials for side of case,...

Those are cheap ways to try first,...
After that,... a new case might help depending on what you have now. An aftermarket air cooler once they make one,... or if you want to start spending some real $$$,... http://www.petrastechshop.com/dadenddfucow1.html or similar,.. watercooling it, will change things noisewise, but you will have to spend for that!!!
