Make sure you are flashing the correct firmware for your drive, Model#s can be freakin confusing for cd/dvd drives I have found. Also try flashing a different version of the firmware. If that doesn't help you'll probably need to RMA it.

ugh, it's a cendyne, so rma is no good. I did buy it w/ my amex, i 'll try to give them a try and hopefully the extended warranty thing will work. i don't wanna mess w/ my mb since i'm not too comfortable with that. i'm pretty sure the firmware is the correct one, i looked at several websites before i started flashing it. thanks for your help.

ok, i decided to clear the cmos with the jumper settings but that didn't fix the problem. I put in a different drive on that same channel and the computer fails to recognize it, it says "atapi primary slave invalid" and in windows it switches it to PIO and i can't get it into DMA. I removed that drive and put it into a secondary slave and it works fine. Is my primary slave channel gone? I would like it to work if possible. thanks.

dont worry its not dead yet.

you can flash it even if bios cannot detect it.
There is a utility called "MTKFLASH" it basically flashes blindly. Read the intrsuctions carefully and remove your other drives to be sure.

Also check if your drive is compatible with the MTKFLASH utility. Use older versions if the newer ones does not work.

Also make sure of the bios you are using. I have flashed drives that was presumed dead (undetected in bios, hang computer at boot) with this utility.

good luck
