Yesterday our dog, she's 12 years old, was lying around near the table and she had been there for a while so my wife's Mom went over to check on her and found that she couldn't get up. I went over and lifted her up and she walked a few feet and her legs went out from under her again. She did this a few more times during the evening.

She has been panting a lot and drinking a lot of water lately too so I'm not sure what's going on with her.

She is a black lab mix and weighs around 75lbs.

Yes, I'm calling the vet this morning to see if they are open and can see her today. Just wondering if anyone had heard of this.

Spend as much time with her as you can. Sorry, but she doesn't have much time left so comfort her and show her all the love you can while you can.

Not necessarily, it does sound bad but there's plenty of things that could do this that the vet can still take care of.

It could be a bunch of things. Every decent vet I've used has had something for 24/7 care. Often they provide contact information for the equivalent of a animal ER that's always open. I had one that came in to work on Christmas day when our dog got really sick that morning. She didn't even charge extra for it, she was a great vet.

sorry to hear, that usually is a bad sign.

Our dog fell down a flight of stairs Saturday night, very scary and tense moments until we checked him over and he appeared okay.

As someone said, there is likely a 24hr vet in your area, and if this is treatable, time is of the essence

We have an emergency animal hospital in our area, open on weekends, evenings, and holidays, very expensive though. When this happened to our Shepard/chow mix it was bad news, congestive heart failure, she was 12 at the time. Vet will be able to tell what's up fairly quickly with maybe some blood work, best of luck to you and your dog..

12 doggy years is like 84 human years. Sadly, it may be time to upgrade to Dog 2.0.

Good luck. It doesn't sound good, but who knows? It may be fixable. Might be expensive....

Hopefully the vet can get her "up and running" again, but at her age...maybe "up and walking" is as good as it gets. It sux to lose a member of the family.

We have an "emergency vet" here. It's as expensive to take an animal there as it is to take a person to the local hospital's emergency room...at least double to triple the cost of the "regular" vet...

Could be a number of things, only a vet will know.

When this happened last year with my 12 year old dog, over the next couple of days, she soon couldn't even sit-up with her front legs then stopped eating. I had her put to sleep. One of the toughest days in my life.

Good luck

Well, now I'm depressed. I hate the thought of having to put her down. We've had her since she was 4 months old, she's a good dog.

I have a 3:30PM vet appointment for her. She seems to be getting around fine today and hasn't had that issue again.

If it makes you feel any better, my last dog lived to be almost 17. And was still in relatively good spirits (just very old and sore)

I hope she pulls through alright.

This happened to my dog, a 14 year old Sheltie. I cried as I carried him, knowing that the dog I had from 7 years old to adulthood, our time together was about over.

He didn't make it much longer... hopefully something can be done for your dog, maybe it's a good sign that she is up and about today? Best of luck, losing a pet that has been a part of your life for so long is tough.

I took our dog to one a few months ago, had her out for a walk and she just sat and refused to go any further, the exam and blood work were $315!. Vet seemed to feel that some kind of trauma to her paw caused that event. Hopefully OP will catch a break here as putting down a dog just plain sucks. I get more upset at that than when I go to a funeral.

Good luck with the vet appointment. Hope it's nothing major and she pulls through fine.

I had a very similar thing happen to my cat. He was ~14 years old and one day he was just laying on the floor meowing (relatively normal) but he kept meowing and meowing. I picked him up and he fell over. I put him by his food dish and he fell over and kept on meowing. I had to put the cat down. The vet thought he may have had a stroke. Best of luck, it sucks putting down your pet

Our Chesapeake Retriever Suzie experienced something like this.
It wasn't good.
Congestive Heart Failure with a blood clot in the hips blocking circulation.
We had her put down as a result. :(
Sorry, Jules. I hope yours turns out better.

Most likely a heart problem. This is how our black lab/shepard mix spent his last few hours.
