My daughter just upgraded to a 8GB Nano and when she plugs it in it doesn't get recognized.

She is using WinXP Pro, SP2. I went to Start/Control Panel/Add New Hardware. I let Windows search and it found the iPod. Windows says that there aren't any drivers for it. I let Windows search and connect to the internet. A new box has popped up and asks me to insert the Compact Disk labeled 'Mobile Device Setup Disk', then click OK.

I asked for everything that the iPod came with and can't find any CD roms. I have the Windows XP Pro disc, but doubt that will help.

I searched for drivers at www.apple.com and just come up with junk (I am NOT impressed with Apple so far).

Any suggestions?

-Thanks in advance for any help you can give, Ken

EDIT: I am un-installing and re-installing iTunes at the moment.

Yes, she had a iPod that worked on this PC before.

I have uninstalled iTunes and downloaded and installed the latest version... No luck yet.

I just tried it (she sold it to her younger brother) and yes, it does work.

BTW: I seem to be looking for a file named 'usbaapl.sys'. A google search shows others having the same or a similar problem, but so far I can't find where to get it.

EDIT: I have typed 'services.msc' in the 'run' menu and I have checked and found 'Apple Mobile Device' to be 'started'. I selected it and then 'restarted' that item. Still no good....

AHAH!!!!!!!!!! I found it!

It seems that I had to search for the 'usbaapl' file on her PC. I found it in two locations. I let the Add New Hardware program run, and selected iPod and then again let it search the internet for the drivers. When it couldn't find them and asked me to install the 'Mobile Device Setup Disk', I directed it to one of the two locations I had found it on her PC (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers). It found the file in there and copied it to where it needed to.

Then I got the 'bung-bing' sound that a USB device was connected and now I got a Kiss and an Appology from my Daughter (she had gotten a bit irate at this problem).

Thanks for trying to help. I told my Daughter that I had to come back and post what had worked in case others have this problem and need to know what to do.
