I know two people who were the type "I do this every day and it has never caused any problems." Both of them would hot plug in their keyboards, mice, and serial devices. Both of them ended up frying a motherboard eventually. One of them still does it.

From what I understand is the risk is greater when you do not plug it in straight and it makes a partial connection.

Ok...just one last word..and thanks all for your help, its appreciated. Apparently, I decided to be stupid and test some more stuff. I took out someone else's processor and put it in mine-still didn't work. So then I took my smelly processor and put it in friends motherboard. Funny smell come out again, and friend motherboard also fries. Call it a hunch, I think the problem is my processor! dammit, I think it messed up my old motherboard, my new motherboard, and my friends motherboard. So I say F#$% it and upgrade to a K7 with a new motherboard and processor.

You guys think if I retrned the motherboard it would be ok? I'm not even sure if I broke it, it just doesn't work, and there aren't any physical features that show any signs of damage...and this entire incident was not my fault..argh!

Why bother to get K6-2 450? Return the mobo and get duron and new mobo for it. Btw the smell of rubber could be anything in the system so take all the pcb apart and smell each one and u should be able to tell which one smells like rubber. Its also possible more than 1 component got burned. try turning the computer on without the video card and see if it boots. Try doing it with all other cards too.

Alright, this appears to be as good a place to ask this as
any thread Ive ever seen.

What about plugging in stuff to a soundcard or even a
livedrive while powered up?
Im talking microphones, midi keyboards, etc. Could it fry
anything?
