Help, my computer really lags in High end games (like Gothic 3) - Hardware issue.

My Spec is as follows:

AMD (San Diego) Athlon 64bit 4000+ 939pin 1mb L2cache

Corsair (TWINX1024-3200C2PRO) 1024MB (2 x 512MB Matched Pair), DDR400 / PC3200 I have two of these, to 2GIG ram.

Gainward PowerPack! Ultra "Golden Sample" Geforce 7800 GTX (256 MB)

I can run loads of game is max detail and Res, like Company of Heroes and Scarface, but I can?t run Gothic III or oblivion, or even Call of Juarez in max details/Res as they look great but lag so much its unplayable! I can?t even run Gothic 3 in 1600 x 1200 on medium quality, it still lags really badly!

So my question is, what out of my hardware isn?t good enough to enable me to run these games in Max Res and details? Do I need to get a GeForce 7950 GX2, or a Athlon X2 - Dual Core Athlon 64's, or is it just me memory is too slow? I know obviously all three would help, but that would cost me way to much : (

Please help.

Many thanks in advance :)

Gothic 3 and Oblivion are demanding on everyone's system... maybe with SLI/Crossfire it's possible to play at max settings. Otherwise, you'll have to turn things down. The Gamebryo engine creates a big hit with shadows enabled... try setting them to low or even off - you should get a sizeable boost from that alone.

Your CPU and memory should not be a problem. Oblivion runs fine on single core. Even Call of Juarez I doubt runs better on dual cores. Don't know about Gothic 3 though. RAM is not slow.

It has to be the GPU or something else.

With that GPU I would expect to play oblivion at 10x7 near max/max settings (no AA)

I think it's out in Europe only, will hit the US in a few more weeks.

Even if it is out in EU, there must be game demos etc online. I can't find demo of this game.
Anyway, will my system be able to run it at 12x10 MAX 16x HQ AF no AA fine?

The issue is Probably with your Hard drive Page file Usage... windows defaults it to be Application Controlled, it is a pretty good bet that if you increase the page file you should get better performance. BF 2 also has this issue, and it is caused by the hard drives accessing over and over as more textures are being rendered.

The one bottleneck of a Modern Computer is the Hard Drives.... and it has been like that for awhile.

Go : Control panel/Advanced/Performance/Settings/Advanced/Virtual memory/Change

Make Sure Custom size is Enabled.

Set Initial size at 3070 MB and Max. at 4092 MB. Click the Set Button, and OK and try that ... Click ok on all the others on the way out... You should be good to go...

If it does not help post back here. But that should do it

Hi,

That did definitely help, but it's still lagging in high details/Res.

Could it be my graphics card then, I read somewhere that there's no point in getting a GeForce 7950 GX2 without a duel core..dunno if that's true or not though...

And you can buy Gothic 3 in the UK now.

Click the Video tab at the top of this page and read the Oblivion benchmarks.

1600x1200 requires much more graphics power than a 7800 has.

So are you saying if I bought a GeForce 7950 GX2 1024MB..that would enable me to run these type of games in Max res, and details?

ohh, and by the way, my hard-drives are: Western Digital WD2500JD 250GB 7200RPM SATA/150 8MB Cache.
