Help my computer is just plain Fudged >.<

Ok, here's the deal, this is my uncle's computer, somehow he did a system restore on a date that the computer had some problems, now the computer wont open almost any file, downloaded or already in memory... Also, I can't open My documents, My computer, Control Panel or any of the other system defaults because it will crash explorer and restart it... Something I've noticed is that everytime it does this, Drwatson is in the scene... after I close drwatson explorer restarts and I can keep working around my desktop mainly... help ... oh ... All I can do **maybe** is enter the registry and do a print screen on the processes under run <=== maybe a worm of some kind (a lot of processes are really strange) some help please

1) if you don't have current-generation antivirus software, download a free 30-day trial of Kaspersky: http://www.kaspersky.com/trials Install that on his system if possible, update it, and then reboot it into Safe Mode before you get into the scanning phase. I'd disable System Restore altogether so the malware can't hide there.

2) if you can't get Kaspersky to install on his system, install it on yours, then pull his hard drive out and drop it into your rig as a slave drive. Scan it in your system and see what you get. Also back up his stuff to your drive while you're at it.

3) while you have it in your system, you could also scan it with Microsoft AntiSpyware too. The older folks are a bit apt to take things at face value, if you know what I mean 😉

Good deal 🙂 Also, can I recommend two things with Kaspersky:

1) go to the Settings tab and set both the on-demand and on-access scanners to Maximum

2) click "Configure Updater" and set it to use From Internet, extended databases

One other piece of advice before I call it a night: the computer needs firewall protection. If it has a router, that's a good start. If he has the computer plugged straight into the modem, however, you should make sure it's got a software firewall running at all times. Under the circumstances, I'd recommend using free ZoneAlarm from http://www.zonelabs.com at least while getting the system de-bugged. Once you're sure it's cleaned up, you could switch to the Windows Firewall if you wanted.
