Help! My christmas present uses 99% system resources!

My 24x Liteon burner burns everything fine, but while it burns, it uses 99%-100% of system resources!

Its so bad that sometimes it even has to activate burnproof when its the ONLY app running!

My friend has the same burner, but a faster computer, but it isn't taking up almost any resources.

granted, my system is a 366@523 and his is an AXP 1600+...............but isn't 99% resources a bit much? It takes 10 seconds for an icon to register that it was clicked on if I'm burning a CD.

Specs:

Win2k SP2
Liteon 24x
Celeron on a BX chipset
Burner is hooked up to the regular IDE port
system also has a Highpoint ATA100 card

hooking the burner up to the ATA100 card results in 60% cpu use when just READING a CD
on the normal IDE port, it uses 30% cpu when reading.

These numbers seem VERY high! My DVD drive only uses ~9% cpu when reading the same CD!

Help 🙂

Windows 2000 doesn't have system resources. Do you mean CPU usage?

Check to see if you have DMA enabled on your burner. Enabling DMA significantly reduces CPU usage.

To enable DMA, go to Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Primary IDE Channel -> Properties -> Advanced Settings

Yeah CPU resources I meant 😕

Anyhoo, Win2k doesn't appear to have DMA options, but enables DMA automatically depending on what the system detects it as. It is detected as an ATA33 drive.

Also, it will MAX OUT reading at 20x!!

My DVD drive does 51x in the nero speed check program (and damn it sure sounds like 51x)

When the burner is on the ATA100 channel, and I try to change it's settings in the ATA card's BIOS, it only gives me the option of PIO mode 0, but it detects the drive as UDMA mode 2 (ata33).

😕

Yep that was the problem! Thanks!

Now down to 2% - 7% cpu use and I can do things while I burn!

And its burning ~1 minute faster than before (probably because its not doing burnproof every 2 seconds 😀)
