HELP! My Barton 2500+ only has 128K L2 cache?

Alright guys, I need your help. Basically I got a cheap CPU/MOBO combo from a guy that said he was having problems with his system. The MOBO is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe and the CPU is a Barton 2500+.

The system runs fine and works great BUT, the CPU seems to only have 128K L2 cache instead of the usual 512K for the Barton CPU's. This is reported by CPUZ, WCPUID, Sisoft Sandra etc... Mine look identical to THIS except where his says 512k L2 cache, mine says 128k.

I am a newbie to AMD systems (always been a Intel guy), but what do you guys recommend trying? BIOS update/rollback? I'm not sure. Also, the stepping for the CPU is AQUCA, does anyone know if this is retail or OEM for warranty purposes? Whats involved in a AMD RMA? Is it difficult, do I need a receipt? I have a retail AMD HSF that was included so I am thinking this is a retail CPU.

Also, could the mobo be causing the problem?

Thx, Jon...

mmm....when u see the POST screen, what does it displays ? and the screen right after the POST,u'll see rams, pci, agp devices, irqs, and the processor speed and cache.press Pause on ur keyboard to pause the screen and take a look at the cache.

If it's true Barton, it should say Barton on processor type on CPU-Z. Get the newest CPU-Z version and get us screen capture. It sounds like he gave you Duron.

Yes. This is a potential rip off.

'Having trouble with his system' or should we read 'Bought an Applebred by mistake' (128k tbred cores).

Get CPU Z and let us know.

Thanks for all the help.

I will post some pics of the CPU stepping (all the info on the top of the CPU) and also of the CPU-Z and WCPUID screenshots. You can then let me know if I am getting ripped. The stepping on the CPU is AQUCA, does that tell you anything?

Keep the suggestions coming.

Go here: http://mp3.zonebg.com/cpu/cpu.php and input your stepping code per the instructions. It will tell if it's an xp or not, don't know maybe even it's a Duron. Sorry, I don't know to make it a link, you'll have to copy and paste 🙂

BTW, can someone tell me how to do the linky thing here. What's the code. Couldn't seem to find it. Thanks

Sweet, that just what I needed!

BTW, to enter a HTML link, click on the 'http' tab above where you enter your message, it will bring up a box that asks for the text to be displayed ie. "click this link" and then it asks for the http address.

Thanks, Jon...

Glad to help, and thanks for the linky info. Do post back and let us know if your chip is identified and what kind

These are the marking on it, the ones I input into the linked program:

axda2500dkv4d 9780578250076
aquca0309tpdw

Here are the results:

Athlon XP Processor
Core Barton
CPU Model 10
Manufacturing Process 130 nm
Approximate Transistor Count 54.3 million
Approximate Die Size 101 sq. mm
Performance Rating 2500+
Working frequency 1833 MHz
Package Type OPGA

Max Die Temperature 85° C
L1 Cache Size 128 KB
L2 Cache Size 512 KB
Multiplier 11x
FSB Frequency 333 MHz
Stepping Code AQUCA
Manufacture Year 2003

Time to call AMD? Who has RMA'ed with them before? Are they genna grill me that I don't have the receipt? I have the retail HSF but the thermal pad is no longer on it (do they still include them?). Any info would be great.

The screenshots of CPUZ/WCPUID are coming later tonight.

Thx, Jon...

what's the problem??

>>>L2 Cache Size 512 KB<<< hehe it's a 2500+ barton, you have 128k l1 cache, but 512k l2

That program works by simply typing in the info from the CPU label, it does not read/detect it from the CPU. Its just a way to identify visually what CPU you have.

Screen shots are coming in like 5 mins.

^ That definately looks like an Applebred.

Also - it appears it runs at 1.7V. Don't all Tbred B's run at 1.65V, 1.60V, 1.55V and 1.45V (only on rare 1700+/1800+ steppings).

How could that be, the first screen says it is a "Barton"? The CPU runs default at 1.65v, my Asus board overvolts to 1.7.

My mistake, the L1 cache is correct, it has 2 x 64k=128k total.

He sold it to me knowing it was having issues with the cache, I figured he just didn't know what he was doing. In any case, I hope to be able to RMA it.

AMD tech support will want you to be able to read the numbers from the heatsink and or the processor. I did a search on acua and everything came up Barton. You don't need a receipt to contact AMD and get an RMA. If the original thermal pad is gone, clean off any silver looking compound.

AMD will also ask which mainboard you are using.

As long as you have the processor with heatsink and the numbers match in AMD's database you should be able to get the processor exchanged. You will have to pay for shipping to AMD. AMD will pay to ship it back. It takes about two weeks from start to finish.
