Last week when it hit 90 I put my ac back in the window after being in the closet all winter.
As soon as I turn it on my allergies flare up big time.
I have cleaned the filter thoroughly and also washed as much of the ac as I can to no avail.
Is there anything else I can try.
Sneeze!
Thanks.

There, no one else needs to say it.

Now, put a hepa filter on the thing and clean it regularily.
Look around and see if a hepa filter is available for your unit, otherwise you may have to so something drastic like get a big filter and duct tape it to the exhaust. Multiple layers FTW!

Vacuum dust and clean the room where the AC resides. Wash all your bedding items. Leave a Honneywell Hepa unit running in the room if you own one and rotate it within the room to filter out the whole room.

Get a can of compressed air and clean it out the vent system the best you can. Sometimes stuff gets by the filter and can get stuck in the vent....compressed air can knock it loose....turning on the fan will get it out of the vent.

What will probably help best is if you leave the fan on all the time to clear it out (even when you're not running the compressor). Replace the AC filter often. Dust your living quarters often and clean your floors really good... That will help keep extra stuff from flying around. Get an air filter to run inside the room with the air conditioner to help. 3M makes some good non-hepa ones with cheaper replacement filters. You can get them at wallmart.

If you know someone with a Sam's Club membership, hit the pharmacy there and pickup a pack of Cetirizine ($17 for 350 tablets in 2, 175 ct bottles). It's the generic for Zyrtec and that's a year supply under $20....I take it and have had less problems since.

central air + HEPA filter FTW.

also check out Zyrtec (or generic). i had some side effects that made it not worth it for me, but most people don't have any. it definitely cleared up my allergies, though.

you can get your ac and ducts professionally cleaned, then there is the expense of the evironmental systems you can purchase for very clean air

forget trying to clean everything. go to your local farmer's market or to a nearby bee place and buy unpasteurized honey. Eat 1-3 tablespoons a day (including the comb if you can find it). This helps with allergies this time of the year.

You are letting in air from the outside. Are your symptoms worse than they would be if you just left a window open?

This seems dubious, see this blog post, particularly the reference to the medical study.
