I agree with the above post. If your a musician serious about recording ditch the Audigy and go get something more suited for multi-trakc recording like a m-audio or digidesign card. Currently I'm saving up for the Digi 001 and Pro-Tools LE system :)

Dahoff - Ken and Amused have given you exactly what you need to do in order to fix your situation. I emailed ASUS prior to buying that motherboard/CPU combo, and that is EXACTLY what they told me must be done for Northwood support.

Thanks guys for the input so far. I'll try manually setting the DIP switches and let you guys know.

Guys, it went flawlessly! In fact, this is my first post ever using my new system. I disabled jumper-free mode and set the DIP switches. Then I backed up the current BIOS (1003) then installed 1005, then enabled jumper-free mode. Then the mobo autodetected that CPU and everything is nice. I installed Win2k without a hitch; however I do have some problems currently.

I installed the network card and it worked correctly. I was able to access the Internet and run Windows Update. But now I get a page not found error for ONLY the Windows Update site. Every other site works. What gives? I noticed that this problem started as soon as I said "disable it" to a Unknown PCI Device (the network card). That doesn't make sense, since apparently it DOES work. It's also after I installed Service Pack 2.

Another issue, I made 2 partitions on my 120GB drive: 15 GB partition (C:) for Windows and all my apps...and the remaining 100GB or so as another partition. My problem is that I can't seem to format that partition. I let it run in Windows, then 2 hours later it said "cannot format drive." I tried using a boot disk. Tried using the command prompt in Win2k as well but couldn't figure out the exact string to type. (format d: didn't work. it kept asking to use the /fs switch for the file system. how does that work?)

I appreciate your great help guys. I've gotten this far, but I still have a couple minor annoying problems.

Can you format the drive in one big partition?

As for the Network card, enable it and get the right drivers for it.

dahoff,

In W2k and perhaps XP as well, you have to create the drive/partition (and make it active) and then reboot before you can format (go to Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk).

For all you guys that helped dahoff out, nice job! Glad you got it going. For the partitions, just create the c: during install, leave the rest unused, then create the extra partitions from Windows.

OK, I had better luck doing it in Win2k from the Admin Tools->Computer Managment part, but at the end of the format, when it got to 100%, it said that the partition was too big. It's a 100GB partition, FAT32. I didn't think there was a size limit in Win2k, so what gives?

Thanks.

Hardware Addict,

That app has been combined in a new diagnostic suite. I got it, but it's not compatible with Windows 2000. I have no idea what utility I can use to format this thing.

dahoff,

Just use NTFS instead. When formatting with NTFS, be sure to select a larger cluster size like 4096 (8192 would be even faster), as you kill drive performance by using a smaller cluster size.

Yes just use ntfs since ,I think, windows 2000 doesn't support fat32 partitions bigger than 32gb(it might be 40).

OK, just back from a very lengthy session of installing software...

First, I decided that I reinstall Win2k before the network card problems got too carried away. I went NTFS this time for both partitions. I used Partition Magic's boot disks for the 100GB partition, and it formatted in less than 5 seconds. Pretty fast, huh? :D

So here I am and the only problem I still have is with my Logitech Cordless Freedom Optical keyboard. It keeps breaking contact with the receiver. The mouse is flawless. Can anyone with a Logitech cordless keyboard help me out here? I find that taking the batteries out and 1) hitting connect on receiver, then 2) hitting connect on keyboard is the only way. I'm using a corded keyboard right now cuz it got really annoying.

Thanks guys for your help!

I have a question about temperatures. I installed the Asus PC Probe utility and here are my temps (all in Celsius):

CPU: 55-57 peak, 45 idle
Motherboard: 24-26 at all times, idle or peak CPU usage. <-- I think all the case fans help here. ;)

Are these temps typical for a 2.0A GHz Northwood? They seem kinda warm to me.

Why is it whenever you despretly want something to work it doesnt.

Notice the old k6-2 uve had for the past 5 years and u dont really give a toss wether it burns to the ground never breaks down.

I just bought my new duron. Pluged it all in and it dont work. The other day I gudged the mother board on my k6-2 putten on a new fan. Still works like a charm.
