Help! My 1TB drive became 32MB!

I got a new Seagate 1TB drive yesterday.

I plugged in as my thrid drive and it was working fine.

Today I reformatted my WindowsXP, but now my BIOS and XP recognizes the 1TB drive as 32MB and is asking me to reformat.

What should I do?

I updated my BIOS to the latest version and it's still showing 32MB.

I ran Seatool, it failed Short Generic test but passed Short DST:

If it failed any test I suggest you send it back.

Yeah, especially if it fails Seagate's own software diagnostics. RMA that puppy, stat!

Part of the problem is in your 3rd sentence,... you reformatted winXP. This is also addressed with the 48bit LBA (Large Block Addressing) that is listed in what you posted.

WinXP by default prior to SP1 will not recognize the full size of that large of a drive. Addressed at support.microsoft.com in article Q303013. The microsoft support website data base is absolutely the best overall when you have windows issues.

Solution - Format as recognized, install WinXP, install all updates from Windows updates, then go back and check if there is now a large amount that is not formatted,... format the rest and continue with life happy!

As it stands, the current partition is recognized as 32MB, not enough room for an XP install. Creating a partition smaller than 137GB may resolve this and allow the install of SP-1.

In fact, you could still Fdisk, blow away the partition, and begin the install at that point. XP should prompt you to create a partition in the unpartitioned space. Make it 137GB or less.

Thanks for the clarification,.. I misread that as GB and not MB,... which is even stranger. Yet the first action would still be to redo the MBR and partition and try to reinstall,... the xp disk is bootable so the same process would apply.

OP-make sure you delete anything and everything listed when inserting XP CD (don't use the Seagate disk to format or partition, as that creates an additional layer of,... crap to say the least), then create a smaller partition than 137GB,... then format, upgrade and then go back into the disk and you should see the rest, format and then hopefully be happy,... otherwise,... you need to RMA.
