I have been running a Duron 600 (O'clocked to 800) on an ASUS A7V motherboard. It has been running like a charm. I recently bought a Tbird 950. I reset all of the jumper settings to default or normal to get the chip up and running. I got no beep indicating a post. Monitor light remained yellow, instead of green when a post occurs. Suddenly, the power button flashed several times and powered off. I tried powering off and then back on but all I get is the green light in the middle of the mobo indicating the board is receiving power. I get no indicator lights on the front of the tower and no fans or hard drives function. ??????

I took out the Tbird and put the Duron back in but I get the same results. I am at a loss about what to do.

Any help is welcomed !!!

Drop back 10 and PUNT! ;) Actually, a little more info would help but here goes. First, try clearing the CMOS on the MB. That would be important. Second, what RAM and Power Supply do you have? Third, recheck the CPU and make sure the HSF is making good contact and the fan is plugged into the correct jumper. Also, when you say you "reset all the jumper settings to default", what exactly did you do? Could be a number of things.

I am using an ASUS A7V mobo which allows you to either have the cpu get the correct multiplier and voltage (default) or by jumpers modify the multiplier and voltage. As I had set up the multiplier to run for 800 for the Duron 600 and bumped up the voltage to 1.6 volts.

I am not sure how to clear the CMOS. Do you do that by taking out the battery ?? I've never had to do that. The HS is making good contact and is plugged in right. All fans were running before the flashing light thing happening. I am using 2 - 128MB DIMMs (Micron) .
The power supply is 300 watts too.
Rigs:

Asus A7V mobo
256MB Ram
Asus Geforce 256 64MB DDR Video
Creative Live sound card
Linksys NIC
etc.

Should I start by clearing the CMOS ?? If so how do I do that ?

OK, it could be a number of things so I'll try to list most and some you'll have to snoop out yourself. First, I took a quick look at the manual for your board and didn't see the CMOS reset either. So removing the battery for a bit will have to do for starters. Be very careful when doing so. Leave it off for a minute or so then replace it back just like it was. Then, starting on about page 18 of your manual, go through all your switches again. There are at least 3 of them that you should set to "Default" or "Jumper Free", so that it takes the guesswork out of things. Remember, that Duron ran @ 100 FSB and the T-bird probably runs @ 133. If you set up as Jumper Free you won't have to worry about this though. Next, judging from what you have said, I need to ask: Did you put the heat sink on yourself? And if so, did you use some fresh thermal paste? If not, pull it and do so. Also, what type of RAM is it that you are using? Was it PC100 or PC133. That will make a difference. In addition, what is the make and model # of the Power Supply. All PS's are not created equal. You must be sure that the one you are using will be OK for the CPU you are using. You can do that by checking on this page from AMD.
There must be a CMOS clearing jumper on the board somewhere. Almost all have them, especially ASUS. Maybe someone more familiar with that board can help here. Try removing the battery first and at the same time reset all the jumpers to "Jumper Free" or "Default". Then try to power up again.

Well, I found out that my power supply went. The Tbird is defective I believe. I but the Duron in with the new ps and no problems at all. Then I tried again with the Tbird, and it wouldn't post. I was in for about 40 seconds. When I began to remove the heatsink, the heat sink was much hotter than it should have been. (the CPU and Heatsink fan were both running normally during the boot-up attempt) I pulled the Tbird and its going back for a replacement.

I am beginning to think that the Tbird was the reason my power supply went in the first place. Is that possible ?? If so do I have any chance of being reimbursed for it ?? Would it help to contact AMD ??

Anyways, thanks for all your help. These forums and generous people sharing information is so helpful !!

Have a great day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, not a chance that the t-bird could take out a power supply. No way to argue that. As far as the temperature difference, the t-bird will run hotter than a Duron under normal situations. Sorry about your PS but look at the bright side; now you can go and get a good quality PS that will run the CPU you want it to. Go for something like an Enermax, HEC, Sparkle, PC Power and cooling, etc. Check on the page I linked to earlier as to which size you will need, but do get a decent one. NewEgg usually has some good prices.

I broke down today and bought a new ps. I was going to choose either an Enermax or CWT-375ATX . The fellow at the shop said they were about equal. I found this ps on the page link you sent. Thanks again for that. Its a 375W with dual fan. Runs quite nice. Next step is to get a new tbird. The defective one is under warrantee.

Thanks for replying so quickly each time.

Cheers !!

Good luck with your new components. I'm glad you invested in a good PS. It will pay off in the long run. However, the person that said, "they were about equal is probably wrong. There are a lot of "little things" that an Enermax has that you don't see on many others. Things like gold contacts, extra long cables, thermal controlled fan speed, etc. But, as long as the other was listed as AMD approved for the CPU you are getting then you should have not trouble in that area. Sorry, I"m just a bit partial to Enermax PS's. I'm sure the other is just fine. Dual fans are a good thing!
