Help, memory related, what's better for encoding CAS / Speed / Size ???

Hello everyone,

I need a little help please, I think it's time to buy some memory and I need help to decide what to do,

Facts:
- Currently I have a P42.6C@3.25 (250FSB, MSI Neo2 865PE), paired with 512MB (2 x 256) of Kingston ValueRam (DDR400 @ 2.5-4-4-8)
- I don't game
- Mostly I use the computer for DivX/MPEG/MP3 encoding and working with video files

So:
1. what is better for me, to buy DDR400-C2 (corsair XMS3200XL, FSB : DDR = 5 : 4) or DDR500-C3 (corsair XMS4000, FSB : DDR 1 : 1)
2. Should I buy 1 GB of memory (2 x 512 MB), or 512MB (2 x 256 MB) is enough
3. Am I absolutely wasting my time and will see no benefit of this and should invest the $$$ in another thing ...

Regarding corsair, that's all I can get (here in Peru the best you can get is kingston valueram .... but I have found someone who can get me some memory, but this guy only deals with corsair memory).

By the way the 1GB is going to cost me about 250US$ (XMS4000 2x512MB), so maybe if 512MB is all I need, I could save some $$$

You need to import that stuff. for encoding your processor is really the big cheese part. Athlon 64 is the best suited and the newer dual core is even better. On the ram size and speed matters alot 1gb should be enough.

Try to get a athlon 64 your encoding time will be alot better

Well he's just upgrading RAM I think

If that's the case get 1GB RAM. Here capacity is over speed since you are encoding; which consumes quite a bit of memory
Anyway I see no point of this 'upgrade' since your old memory and you 'planned-to-get' memory have minor differences. If you have 2 more DIMM slots you might stick 2 more 256MB RAM to make 1GB.

Intel system is not too picky about CAS latency. CL3 would do fine. If you have the money then of course you can opt for CAS2 for ~5% performance boost
