help me with this monitor problem (compaq p50 + geforce + win2k)

i have a friend who just brought his system to abroads. he plugged in a compaq (P50) monitor to his box. upon booting, everything is fine, until after the win2k bootup status bar.. the screen will just go blank (black). any ideas? he's running a hercules geforce2 mx.
