I have got an old K6/200 and would like to use this for a game server at a lan party but I have a problem. When it boots, it says

"DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

I have tried swapping the cables round on the floppy drive but this hasn't helped.

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

System Specs are:

K6/200
Chaintech 5TTM1
64MB PC66
4MB S3 Virge
Modem
Awe 64 Gold
10Mb NIC
1.44 Floppy
2.1GB Disk

I have tried another floppy drive which didn't help.

Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to boot from the floppy. The HD isn't plugged in. I've tried two floppy drives and it still fails.

Help?!?!?!?

It's possible that your floppy controller is busted. Does the light on the floppy drive come on when it was trying to boot? Have you tried booting with the same floppy in another computer? I've also seen instances when the small power supply connector wasn't working. Have you tried swapping power supply connectors? Good luck.

I suppose the controller could be stuffed. The floppy light does come on but it doesn't seem like it is trying to read off it. I just tried another power cable and it didn't help.

Any other suggestions????????

Are you sure the bios settings for the floppy corespond to where you have it connected on the cable? Did you make sure the boot order tries the A: drive first?

Okay. I don't think this is going to work so can you give me some help with this.

I have a 2.1GB drive in my other computer. How can I make this bootable so I can put it n the other computer?

while the 2.1gig hd is in the other computer, just copy the win98 boot disk to the drive. since it has the same files as the boot disk the hd will now be bootable

Make sure you've tried the floppy cable every possible way and try the other connector on it. I thought i had a dead floppy drive, but it was just a strange cable that you had to plug in reversed. I could be a bad cable too, so try a new cable before you write off the motherboard or floppy drive.

If you have a spare HD in another system that you want to use, then there are 1 or 2 things you have to make sure of. Use fdisk on the HD and see if it has a Primary Partition on it, if it does then make sure that the Primary Partition is Active. If this is not the case then you are going to have to make this drive the Primary Master in your working system to set it up. Use fdisk to create the Primary Partition and make it Active. While your there you may as well format c:/s to make it bootable. If you don't have a cdrom or it isn't bootable then I would suggest copying the Win98 folder from your cd onto the HD, so you can install windows on the system.

EDIT:
If the drive does have a Primary Partition and it is Active, then you can do an sys A: C: or format C:/s to properly copy the system files. If this drive already has a working copy of windows on it, then I would start in safe mode, to minimize the search for new drivers.
