help me with math!!!! (solved!)

Triangle WTU is proportional to triangle RSU. Maybe if you can use that to relate 450 to X 🙂

Good ol' geometry.

I notice triangle RSW is also proportional to triangle VWU. The side with length 450 is thus proportional to the side with length 270. Triangle RSW is 5/3 bigger than VWU. I'm still figuring out how to use that to find X though 😱

BTW, you have a typo. Angle SWT is not a right angle. You meant STW right? make sure there's no other typo.

aww... wonderful geometry.... I'm taking it this year, getting into all the proportional BS really soon... blah.

"I'm still figuring out how to use that to find X though"

same here....yep, typo, its STW.

geometry is suck.

Triangle RWS is proportional to UWV. From this, you can find the ratio of UT to TS. Then from that, you also know the ratio of UT to US. Then you can find the answer--the ratio of UT to US is the same as the ratio of X to 450.

I don't want to just post the answer--if you need more help, lemme know.

<< are you allowed to use Cos(theta)=adjacent/hypothenuse, sin, tan, etc? or just by comparison? >>

what the heck are you talking about? 😕

<< so the ratio of UT to SU is 3:8? >>

Yep, you've got it.

Hoeboy: You shouldn't need trigonometry to solve this.

really? that's trig? i thought it was geometry lol. the ratio is 5:3 isnt it? not 8:3. BTW, i just realized using trig, u can solve this in like 2 steps. bah. there goes math for ya. learn it through brute method only to learn the easy way later.

btw, i just want to point out that if you ever want to go into higher math (calc and beyond), you should get to know geometry and trig really well or else it'll come back to bite ya. else, you'll rarely find a use for all this crap u learn. btw, got to proofs yet? they're so fun eh? 🙂

*shudders* proofs....

I am taking this "Advanced algebra and trigonometry" next year...

yes, very fun indeed 😀

naw Joony, you learn Trig functions near the end of geometry...trust me, I already took both 😛
And when you get to Algebra 3/4/Trig, you will forget this crap they try to get you to know in geometry, but you get to learn the Radians circle! I was sooo bored that during church one day (/me not very churchy), I pulled out a pencil and an offering envelope and I drew the Radians circle, then the Sines of all of them, then the Cosines of all of them.....3 Radians circles...soooo bored.....
edit: OMG..I just saw the post about proofs, just mentioning them....GOD I hated them! They are so friggen pointless, and they teach you what...these stupid theorems that you forget the next year and don't use them anymore. I *hated* proofs....damn them to hell....
