 Hi everyone!! Im new to this forum but I've visited anandtech during my planning time during the past school year researching my new components to the pc that I ended up building myself. Anyway, I'm here to call upon your expertise and far more computer knowledge than what i have. Here's my dilema,

When battlefield vietnam first came out i bought it and installed it on my only computer at the time: p4 2.2, 512 ram, 120 hdd, 5700 ultra 256mb and the game ran flawlessly. But once I saw bf2 advertised late in 2004, i decided to build myself a second computer so i could play online alonside my 9 year old son.

So March came and I built myself the following computer: amd 3500 939 pin, 160 sata hdd, 1 gb ram, 6800 gt pci-e 256 mb video card, gigabyte k8nf-9 nforce 4 mobo. Ive installed doom3, half life2, age of mythology, rome total war, and many more games and they run just great on this setup. However, when i installed bfv on my amd comp the damn game would always freeze with looping sound once i entered a multiplayer map.

So now bf2 demo comes out and im able to run it on both my old comp and new one with no hassels at all. Retail bf2 comes out and i run to ebgames to get me a copy. I install on new comp to see how it plays and guess what......i get the same game freeze with looping sound. the only way i can regain control of my comp is to reboot it. I update all necessary drivers, do memtest on my 1 gb of ram, my video card runs at 71 celsius when i finish playing games like doom3, hl2, so i know im not overheating. I search every forum in the net related to bf2 and alot of people are getting the same problem but with no solution. So last night i go over all the things that ive been troubleshooting and i get this weird ass idea to remove my old computers sound card (sb live 5.1) and install it on my computer which has onboard sound card (realtek ac97). I disable through my bios the realtek and install the sb live. after doing so, i load up bf2 and it runs!!...For about 7 minutes and then the freezing starts again. Mind you, with my old comp i was able to install bf2 retail and was able to play multiplayer without any lock ups at all although the video wasnt as pretty as my new comp. so i remove the sb live from my new comp and re-enable my realtek and get the newest driver for my realtek. I log online to see what happens and im able to start playing.....for about 6 minutes and then another freeze.

So, I guess my question is this, does anyone think this issue is game related or is my new computer cursed??? Im sorry that i typed so much but i wanted to be as clear as possible so hopefully someone could help me troubleshoot the problem as EA definetely does not. Thanks so much

from all the posts i have read, it is game related, and not your computer. with my rig i can sometimes play either the demo or retail for 20mins and no problems or sometimes within 5mins i get a crash.

unfortunately this is how most releases seem to be for ea. they need a patch to correct this badly.

Did you try to lower the hardware acceleration for your sound in dxdiag? Also what settings are you using in the audio section of BF2?

Hey man, you and I have the same rig (assuming my 6800GT gets here today :D ). Right now I'm running the game with a X700PRO and it's running flawlessly. I wish I could give you more help, but in cases such as yours, I typically get extreme. If I have the time and inclination, I'll reformat. Otherwise, I run TuneXP 1.5, CCleaner, defrag, spybot, you name it. I try to give my rig the fattest shot of antibiotics I can muster up. Make sure you're not loading excessive services.

Before all of this though, try running your audio in software mode just to see what happens.

Enjoy gaming with your son... I can't wait for that day to arrive ;) . My boy is 2 years old.

Turn off dynamic shadows. I was having black patches and weird high pitch audio tones prior to this. You might also want to delete your shader cache and have the game redo it.

Just to add to what people are saying about the audio settins, as far as I know, only the Audigy 2 ZS supports the hardware setting. Everything else needs to be run in software. At least, this is what i gathered from looking at the readme included with the Demo of this game.

For an Nvidia video card, you'll need the included 77.30 drivers (or the latest nvidia release, 77.70) in order to fix a problem that will otherwise be seen with shadows.
