Help me with a build...

I've been out of the loop for like 8 months now and in computer hardware time that is a LOT of time so I'm asking for advice, I've been meaning to build a new computer for a long time now. My budget is around 1000 to 1500 dollars, I want it to last as long as possible and that it can be upgraded nicely even several years in the future. My last computer was a 478 socket AGP computer JUST when LGA 775 and PCI-E was coming out so my upgrade possibilities have been very slim now. So if something like PCI-E2 or new intel socket or DDR3 or whatever is coming out like 2 months from now that will make their old counterpart obsolete and hard to find then I'll wait because I don't want to go through the AGP cards shortage fiasgo.

So yeah, can anyone help me out with this build? Here is a list of things I DON'T need:

-Operating System
-Speakers
-Keyboard
-Mouse
-Monitor
-Optical drives

So yeah I need everything else. I was thinking something on the lines of a P35 chipset, a quad core intel processor and a 8800 card but I'm not really sure. Did AMD come up with something new? I can wait like 2 months or a bit more, is it worth waiting that amount of time at this moment? etc, etc.

If anyone could help me with this I'd be SO grateful 🙂

A good Dell setup is $699-ish with 22" LCD monitor, which is difficult to beat. Shipping's free. http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/6953/38032237bu9.jpg is a good link showing how to get started. It's easy to put together a C2D 2.13 setup with 1GB of RAM and such for $650 or so - with the 22" LCD screen. Add a few hundred for extras (more RAM if you like, better video card if you care) but otherwise, it's pretty good as it is for normal tasks.

Look at the 2007 PC Building Bible by PC Gamer. THey put together a $1400 pc that should work pretty well. Might want to swap some things out here and there (link to a forum w/ a pic pic)

DDR3 is out but expensive, ddr2 should be readily available at least through 2009 and probably sometime in early/middle 2009 ddr3 will start to be cheaper then ddr2 (though it could happen sooner). PCIe 2 is do out in the next month or so with x38 and will be on nvidia/ati's new chipsets later this year but it is fully backwards compatible with pcie (ie a pcie 2.0 card will work with a pcie 1.0 board) so for the forseable future you shouldnt have trouble finding cards that will work with pcie 1.0 boards (and probably buy the time you cant find the card the cpu/chipset will be holding you back more then the card).

Any p35/680i/x38 board you get should run fine with intel's 45nm cpu's (the next gen) but the one after that goes to integrated memory controller and that means new boards.
