Please help me upgrade my XPS 410 .
I have MOTHERBOARD CT017 , E6600 @2.4 LGA775 Bus speed 1066 Mhz and 2GB Ram , 500 GB in Raid 0 configuration ,GForce 8600 GTS
Basically I?m looking for more speed and memory . I use lot of video-editing software
Question ?
If I got any quad CPU like Q9300 or Q6700 ?is that going help me ? or I should get faster dual like E8500
Memory ?.what kind of ??
Like Corsair Dual Channel TWINX 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory latencies of 5-5-5-18
Or
Kingston HyperX Dual Channel 4096MB PC8500 DDR2 1066MHz Memory latency timing of 7-7-7-20
Or DDR2 RAM is enough
Any info ,any help will be great

DDR2-1066 isn't going to help you, and might not even work properly in a Dell. I would stick to 1.8V DDR2-800 or even DDR2-667.

Quad-core typically helps in video editing, but what application(s) do you use?

Oki doki ...DDR2-800

question ? is CT017 support quad CPU ???

what applications i use ??? many ....photoshop ,pinnacle 12 , ulead 12 ,Magix pro12 ,sony vagas , all Boris app, Tmpgenc, dvd lab pro ...just few most

If you have an e6600 your motherboard will probably support a q6600 or q6700 but the newer chips are suspect without a BIOS update (which may or may not be available).

"probably" is not enough for me ...this will cost me about 200 -250 $ i don't care about BIOS UPDATE ...in 1 year i7 will rule

I have a Dell XPS 410. It will only support the 1066mhz quads. My 410 originally had a e6300, stock heatsink is plenty good for cooling a q6600 which I have in mine. Stock power supply is also good for a 8800GTS 640mb card (which I have in mine)

I had 8gb of ram and vista 64 bit installed on the machine with no issues, but went back to 4gb and 32bit due to some programs i use not working at the time on 64bit Vista.

board wont suppoert the e8xxx series, q9xxx series, or any of the e6xxx 1333mhz bus C2D's

thank you for info
question ?
its worth upgrade to q6600 ? did you see different performance between E and Q .
thank for info about board support !!

You need to stick with the 65nm 1066FSB Intel chips. The newer 45nm 1333FSB chips will not work in the XPS 410.

This means the fastest CPU your mobo supports is the Q6700. The Q6600 is a better value however.

The XPS 410 only supports PC5300 or PC4300 DDR2 RAM. You probably can use PC6400 sticks but the Dell will run the memory at PC5300 (667MHz). IOW, don't spend extra cash for faster RAM.

Your Dell also needs to have the correct BIOS flash or it will not recognize the Core 2 Quads.

thank you "mithrandir 2001" for replay to topic !!!!
the latest bios flash is 2.5.3
still i have question
is worth to go with quad ??? can I see different performance ?

i went from a e6600 to the q6600, all subjective, but to me it seemed faster. the few gamres i play do play alot better/smoother/less jittering.

Is there any mother board I can replace with my 0CT017 so can fit in 410 case ?
I will keep my case ,keep my HD ,keep my two dvd burners ,keep my power supply and then over clock my E6600 (maybe new heatsink )
Thank you for replay

Looks like the Dell XPS 410 uses a mBTX motherboard. Short answer: there aren't any good replacement mBTX boards out there. Trust me, I've looked. The best I found was an Intel board that still wouldn't allow overclocking.

You might try the BSEL modification, but understand you do this at your own risk.

Otherwise your options are to try either a Q6600/Q6700 or to fully upgrade (I suggest an i7 system now that the chips are out and prices are dropping on motherboards & DDR3).
