my pc:
Duron 800=8x100@866=133x6.5
Asus A7V133
Micron 256 Sdram pc133
Gigabyte Geforce 2 Pro 64Mb DDR

Everything in that PC sounds like it can cause it to slow down even if you upgrade a component. I think you should get a new GeForce 4. If you decide to build another computer, you can just move your GeForce 4 over.

Your best bet if your on a budget is a socket A budget board like the ECS which can take PC133 ram or DDR ram and buying 1600+XP from newegg. You can get both for roughly $115 shipped maybe a little more or little less. You could use a video card upgrade but right now you mainly need to get a new mobo and CPU.

The A7V133 is a Socket A board. I would suggest a $53 XP 1600+ from newegg + the best DX8 card you can afford. If you're on a tight budget, I'd recommend a Radeon 8500. Mid-range budget, Ti4200/4400. High end budget, Radoen 9700 Pro. If you've got the budget for it, a DDR motherboard would also be a nice upgrade in addition to the CPU/gfx card upgrade, adding about 10-20% to your overall performance.

I know the A7V133 is a socket A board. Just looked at the requirements for Mafia they do recommend you use a 8.1 DirectX card and a new Radeon 8500LE would be a nice improvment as your current one has no 8.1DX support. You should be able to get by with a 1600+ in that mobo but I say that will top it out. If you don't get a newer mobo that should be next on your list to upgrade.

Yes, they will make a difference for your PC - a VERY BIG difference 😀 When you get a some more money to spend on your PC, a new motherboard and DDR RAM might be a good "next step" to complete the upgrade (you can your current motherboard and RAM to help defray the cost), but with that CPU and video card, your system will be MUCH faster than it is now. Oh, one other thing, I just noticed you're getting the 64MB version of the gF4. If you plan on keeping that card a while (say, a year or more) then it would probably be worth getting the 128MB version as future games will require more textures and more video RAM to keep them all. This is especially true if you are looking forward to DOOM3 which will use as much as 80MB of textures at a time, and D3-based games (Q4, RtCW2, JKIII, etc) could easily use more.
