A story is posted (for example on @AP - Associated Press) and then follows all the replies or retweets. I'm reading them all and 90% of my time doing that is re-reading the short verbiage of the original story - scanning for what was added. Some people put it at the beginning and some at the very end. With all the symbols and quotes, it's a friggin mess. Couldn't they figure out a better system?

you're limited to 140 characters per message

there's no standard for formatting your message. it's up to the user. i think the problem is some people don't really understand what hash tags are for. They use them almost as subtext instead of something people can search for or adding the messages to a group.

Have a Twitter account and barely use it. I use Facebook the most. I have a total of 20 friends! Why? Because I don't friend every fucker out there! I just have Facebook for friends and family. No one has 300 friends in real life.

I don't get it myself either,..

If I was a celebrity, a news organization or a business, I can understand it's use/need. But, otherwise,.. meh.

I concur with the others who don't get Twitter. I guess it can be useful for news organizations and companies though, like Newell Steamer mentioned. Otherwise to me it just seems like another social media attention-whore type thing.

twitter is awful. if facebook is bad, twitter is worse.

the original idea maybe is reasonable, but people abuse it; not just the re-tweeting, but the mound of useless tweets. i tried following a few actors or personalities i like to watch on TV, but when they put out 40 tweets a day, and with the format of a single scrolling page, it makes it impossible to follow for anyone not glued to the screen.

i'm ok with information delivery, but i dont want to listen to you scratching your ass.

Please, find me any public forum with any kind of non Nazi moderation that isn't the exact same. Twitter has the exact same percentage of stupid crap as ATOT and Facebook. 90% of it is dumb shit nobody cares about, the other 10% only subsections of people care about.

One thing that pisses me off with Facebook is that your timeline magically changes from recent stories (which I want) to top stories. I want to see recent shit and new posts not top stories! The way Facebook works too is stupid. There's like a 50% chance one of my friends will see my post. The reason is because top stories is on by default and no one changes it to recent stories.

Then the thumbs up crap. It's has to be the most dumb ass way of communication I have ever seen. Leave a comment bozo! Not a dumb thumbs up!

I hate that too. I wanna know what's going on now, not two days ago.

It's great for following narrow interests. For instance you're a fan of an NFL team. You follow the team's beat writer, who often posts tidbits and opinions that don't make it into articles. You follow certain 'superfans' who seem better informed than most and make interesting posts.

There are national nfl reporters, but you don't want to follow them because 31/32 of the stuff they post is about other teams that you don't care about. But fortunately your beat reporter and superfans retweet the relevant ones for you.

So just by looking at your timeline, you can get a pretty good feel with what is going on with your team.

Similarly there may be 10 authors I'm interested in following. Instead of having to remember to check each one of their their sites, I automatically get notified whenever a new book is coming out or if they're posting snippets or something.

It's sort of like RSS

If you're just following @AP and reading random replies, you're doing it wrong.

I quickly unfollow people who post useless/uninteresting junk

You just have to find people who only post 'good stuff'

Some only post something twice a year, but it's something i want to know about.

I enjoy going on Twitter during sporting events. Pretty much the only time I do; take a look at things during commercials, sometimes interesting and funny stuff is tweeted, sometimes not. /shrug

I can't believe there's no option to sort your News Feed by most recent first. Well I think there is, but it does not work at all even though that's what mine is set to. My News Feed "mostly" sorted that way, but not really. WTF? And it's always been like this so I guess they don't intend on making it work right.

Other then famous people or noting important news...I fail to see why your average person should even be able to tweet anything at all.

"Just had some Starbucks #notamorningperson" Do most people just make up hashtags and not even understand the concept of it?

https://twitter.com/hashtag/notamorningperson

I just made up a stupid tweet, and it looks like many people actually tweeted it. Look at how absolutely worthless those tweets are.

There is but it always reverts back. Also now the feed is like 50% ads.

I just had to point out the irony of this. Four comments apart in the same thread, no less!

Edit: Or was it a joke that went over my head?

The worst part is the iOS Facebook app. Even having to go in a menu to get to the recent items shows actually recent items about half the time. I don't care what someone posted about last Sunday. If I didn't like it then, I certainly won't now.

Here is why I don't understand. If you tweet a message, isn't there a good chance it will just get lost in the sea of other new tweets?

Sending an email seems to make as lot more sense...a streaming news ticker is a stupid way to communicate anything important.
