I assisted/advised someone on a new build.
Here are his specs:

The 9800X3D is rated as one of the best gaming processors around…he got a screaming 5090 GPU, all top notch components….so why does my i5-13600K build beat his in Cinebench R23?

Could it be that it’s been about 2 1/2 years since I ran the Cinebench R23 test on mine, and there might have been some changes in the testing? They’re both R23…not the newer 2024 test.
(and, yes, I realize tests like this don’t tell the whole story about performance)

The answer is pretty simple, Cinebench doesn't test gaming performance. It tests multi core performance for heavy workloads. The 13600K has more cores and threads so it out performs the 9800X3D in this case.

OK, that makes sense…I think.

Recommendations for things that will test his system’s abilities?

Unless he's trying to test the system for a specific reason, i.e. check temps, or stability due to overclocking, there's really no need to do benchmarks. Just have him play games and enjoy the system.

If he really wants to do benchmarks try the 3DMark suite. These are not free though. Some games have built-in benchmarks as well.
