Since i got the same card i can say it can handle the temps.
I used MSI Afterburner and MSI Kombustor to watch the temps on full load, the fan is working and no problems.
(at 65C, 70C, 75C, 80C the fan goes faster, 81C was my max temp on full load)
Dont forget to connect the JPWR1 connector

MY system:
MSI P45D3 Platinum (v1.8) - QX9650 @ 3.6GHz 1600MHz FSB - 8GB DDR3 OCZ3G13332G - MSI HD5970 - X-Fi Titanium - 2 X HD753LJ - CORSAIR TX750W - Vista Ultimate 64 BIT

Here are some pics with GPU1 and GPU2 at full load, ingame it never gets 100% :

EDIT: Dont mind the fan speed on that pic, its working but the speed does not show.

Let me clarify: I didn't mean the 5970 couldn't handle the temps. What I meant is the particular card I got was probably defective and couldn't handle them. I sent it back and I'm hoping to get a new one soonish.

As far as the fan goes, the fan in my MSI worked. What didn't work was the manual fan control: I couldn't manually change the fan as any attempts to change it would immediately bump it to 100% fan speed. This is under CCC, as MSI Afterburner grayed out the fan option (which works fine on my 5870) and didn't allow me to change it at all.

You mentioned the JPWR1 connector. Is that the 8-pin connector that goes alongside the 6-pin connector in the 5970? If that's the case, yes I connected it properly.

i had similar problems with my sapphire 5970. i had to use old drivers (the ones on the disc), otherwise games would crash or my computer would just freeze and reboot on it's own. it wasn't until the driver released in late april was i able to run the latest.

MSI Afterburner v1.5.1 (2010-03-18) works on my MSI HD5970, just make sure you choose GPU2 in settings (GPU1 will not work)

These are my own auto fan speed settings depending on the temp.
