Here's the deal:

My daughter's computer, which is running Win98SE, is
now in a weird state...Some event is recurring with
great frequency...I can't figure out what it is,
because the warning/error message flashes on the screen
for only a fraction of a second, then disappears. But this
happens many times a minute...It flashes on and off
so quickly that I don't believe that the entire notice
box is even getting output to the screen before it
disappears again.

Because of this even, whatever it is, if I pull down
a menu, the menu will close itself before I get a chance
to even select the menu item I want...

I disconnected all the inputs to the computer--mouse,
keyboard, modem cable, etc...Leaving on the monitor
connected and whatever the event is continues...

I also used "Second Chance" to restore the computer to
a time when I believe it was not subject to this
problem (I suppose I might not have noticed it before,
but that's hard to believe), and it seemed to NOT help...
Still getting the flashes...

Is there any simple way to trap this problem to figure
out what's going on...

Try using Ctrl + Alt + Delete to close down programs until the error message stops. But it'd be easiest to reinstall Win98SE, it needs a good reinstall every so long.

if you're quick, press screen print to copy the error message to clipboard & view it by pasting the clipboard contents in MS paint or any other suitable photoshop program!
