I picked up Fallout Trilogy at Target the other day for less than $4 and have been attempting to play it the last couple of days. I have looked at various walkthroughs and hints on the web and they tell you to talk to people and find things in lockers, etc. So far all I have been able to do is wander in the dark and be attacked by various rodents, I have seen no characters to interact with and looking for stuff to collect has been a no go also - you see a wall, you see a broken computer. I know that it is supposed to be a good game, what am I doing wrong?

You did make it out of the first rat-filled cave didn't you?

You should East travel to Shady Sands, there's plenty of people to talk to there.

The original Fallout and Fallout 2?

Well, today it's different certainly, you need to set up your mind about its features, game-play mechanics and user interface in relation to what were the standards back a couple of years ago, if you prefer action-oriented games then I can easily say that Fallout, Fallout 2 and even Fallout Tactics aren't for you, plain and simple, those games require a lot of patience and tolerance for slow-paced game-play, I remember in the original Fallout, just making my way outside of the first outdoor area when you get out of the vault with all the rodents around, it took me about an hour or so just trying to get used to the turn-based nature of the game-play, you attack, it misses, the rodent attacks, it hits you, you heal, you attack, it hits the rodent, you kill it, walk about two meters and oh! another rodent (repeat about a dozen times), then you finally get out of the area and you can make your way to the first town to the east (that's what I remember doing anyway, not like you're obliged to do that).

Anyway, as I said Fallout 1 and 2 aren't for everyone, Fallout 3 is more suited for a general audience.

Thanks for all of the comments, I went back to the start and realized on my first try I had somehow gone directly from one bunker to another without encountering any characters. Upon restart I had a better experience and stumbled across a town with people in it, so now it is a bit more interesting.
Thanks again!!

Good to hear you found your way. FO1 and 2 require way more patience and thinking than newer RPG's and are just more difficult overall. I think this makes the games way more rewarding, so don't give up too easily if you get stuck in them.

I restarted FO2 about a year ago and ran straight for the power armor/power fist...took me a couple times restarting to make it to the bottom of the map without a random encounter going off, but man what fun and mayhem I wrecked after quickly aquiring those items.

I really liked the combat system in 1 & 2 and didn't care much for #3. Jagged Alliance 2 is another game with similar combat from FO 1 & 2 that I still play regularly as well. If that goes on sale again for $2 on Steam, I'd suggest grabbing it.

Once you get into it....you wont be able to stop......trust me

I remember getting married.....then I pimped out my wife

People have different tastes. Just because people say it's good doesn't mean you personally will think so. IMO there are probably plenty of games out there you WOULD like, so why waste time forcing yourself to enjoy something when you could be playing something you truly like?

Fallout 2 is one of the few games that is UNQUESTIONALY, UNALTERABLY, IMMUTABLY AWESOME.

Like Zenoth said, you need to put yourself in the 1995 mindset and ignore any failings of the UI, and any of the varied bugs you'll encounter (Be SURE to pick up the community patch for Fallout 2).

Honestly, that turn-based F2 combat with the ridiculous death animations are still one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time. I can't ever respect Bethesda for butchering it.

I had the same problem, the UI was so clunky I just couldnt get into it.

And sadly the UI is actually better than Oblivion.

As for the OP, Fallout 3 can be assloads of fun, if you just allow yourself to get into it.
BUT, its not for everyone. Thats just the way it is. If you're used to Final Fantasy then nothing will help you get into The Elder Scrolls or Baldurs Gate or Fallout 1 or Fallout 3 or probably not even Deus Ex. Some games are just so different that nothing can be done to make them mainstream.

I like early Final Fantasy games, and I loved the Fallout, the Elder Scrolls (except Oblivion), and the Baldurs Gate series. Liking a type of game has no bearing of if you'll like another type.

As has been mentioned, OP, you just might be into the kind of RPG the Fallout series was. It was supposed to be based around the GURPS system, but some licensing issues came up and they made a system very similar. It is supposed to emulate real life situations better than a "you have 20 hit points and something attempts to attack you (/random 1, 20 = 12), they miss". The games ended up being extremely well.
