Well I'm finally ready for my college build and it's been a good while since I've done any reading about computer stuff - venturing back into the PC world after a two year hiatus is, well, intimidating to put it simply. Anyway I tried looking around without posting but it's sort of hard; I was able to pick out a motherboard and video card, but that's about it. I really don't have a budget, I'd like to keep it around $1500 or so, can be a bit over or under.
So I picked out the MSI P6N SLI Platinum because it seems like a nice, well-performing board for the price, and I've had good experience with MSI in the past. For the video card I'll most likely be getting an 8800GTS because I want to be DX10 ready (hopefully it fits in the small Lian Li PC-A05 case that I'm eyeing).
As for the CPU, how is the Intel E6420? And I'm totally lost when it comes to memory...no idea what to look for. Hard drive...what's the best capacity/price ratio these days? I don't need any raptor drives or RAID setups.
Anyway I'm basically just looking for a gaming/audio/digital art PC, I want quiet, and minimal overclocking (not in the whole OCing thing anymore). I want it to be pretty future-proof, since this will have to last me all four years with incremental upgrading as I need them.
Ok so here's what I have so far:
Motherboard: MSI P6N SLI Platinum - $160
Video Card: EVGA 8800GTS - $270
CPU: E6420 - $190
Memory: G.Skill PC2-6400 1GB sticks x2 - $130
Hard drive: Seagate 7200rpm 320GB - $80
Sound card: E-MU 0404 - $100
Case: Lian Li PC-A05B w/ blowhole - $125
PSU: Corsair Modular 520W - $90
Cooling: Zalman 9500, video card ???, Noctua 800rpm x2 - $85
Monitor: Hanns.G 19" Widescreen - $170
Optical: Asus DVD-RW w/ lightscribe - $30
Peripherals: Logitech MX518, Microsoft S82 - $65
Total so far: $1495
Yeah I know it's a lot I still have to cover, so thanks so much for your help in advance; any comments on what I already have and any suggestions for missing links are greatly appreciated. And yeah, I'm coming from an old A64 GeForce 6-series build, so be easy on me 🙂
