Help me setup a routine for golf

I'm looking for some help setting up an exercise routine to help my golf game, and general fitness.

A little backgroud...

I'm 6'5 ~225-230lbs, 29 yrs old. I use the eleptical machine every other day, so I'm pretty happy with my cardio workout, as I've seen nice increases in my stamina and decent weight loss over the last couple months.

However, I'm very inflexible, and this really hurts my golf game. I'd really like a good set of stretches/exercises that will increase the range in motion of my joints and flexibility in my back/core/hips/neck/shoulders, etc... you get the point.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Do some yoga ... my wife is a yoga instructor, and is ungodly flexible. When we play golf, she can take her club further back than John Daly on the backswing, and still complete a smooth swing. Of course, that leads to her often getting a bit out of control :)

Also, check out Golf Fitness book

I have this book, and it is pretty decent on explaining what the exercises do, a routine and what areas to work on.

Very few people have the liver and bankroll necessary to maintain a John Daily routine.

You need speed and flexibility more than anything. Once you have a great swing, then more strength will help. There was a high school kid a year or so ago who made it into the final round at the tournament that occurs in Hawaii I think in Jan, it was his skill, not strength, that got him there. (small guy, didn't look built or anything, very impressive performance) He would have made some nice winnings that day if he wasn't an amateur.

No.

On the other hand, you did mention your general fitness, so I may try to help you... If you're happy with your cardio when you're on an elliptical and looking for a routine for your golf game, you really need to rethink some fitness goals. I don't mean to sound harsh, but it's true. There's no real point in trying to be fit for your golf game. Stretch if your flexibility is bothersome. Problem solved. Really, I don't mean to sound like such a jerk, but it's frustrating when I'm trying to help people with real, true fitness and you're looking to help the score of your game involving less exertion than bowling, but slightly more than billiards.

Thanks for the advice guys. You're all correct, flexibility is the name of the game for power and consistency in golf. I can hit the ball plenty far, mostly due to my above average size and (marginal) skill, but I'd love to not feel tension in my shoulders and back when the club goes parallel. It'll only get worse as you get older...

I sit at a desk all day and am very inflexible to begin with, and I should have been more specific in my request. I'd like to be more flexible and have stronger joints, and an improvement in my golf game would be great too. :)

Why bother posting then? Just because his goal might be in the end to help his golf game, he still wants help with a routine. He is still interested in fitness, and your apparent dislike of the game of golf shines through.

On another note, do you really think fitness has no positive effects on a person's golf game? If you're walking on the course, and play on a hilly track, it is hugely beneficial to be in better shape. Ever heard of a guy named Tiger?

You have never played golf have you?

I have taken people just to the driving range and the next day they wonder why they are so sore. 4 + hours on a golf course and they would not be able to get out of bed.
