I have been acquiring parts piecemeal since the middle of November and this is what I have come up with so far.
CPU: None Yet, was going to go with a 2500+, but the locked multi scares me.
Heatsink: Looking at the Silent Boost from ThermalTake but open to suggestions. I would like to stay at $30 or below for both the HS and F. I don't need a dead silent fan, but no screaming Deltas either.
Mobo: Shuttle AN35N-Ultra $48 AR (newegg)
RAM: Buffalo CH-5 256 MB PC3200 $42 (newegg)
HD: 120 GB 7200 RPM 8 MB Cache WD and a 80 GB 5400 RPM Maxtor (from my old computer)
Video: 9800 Pro 128 MB $240 (FS/FT). The Person I bought it from said he ran it at XT speeds. I'm not banking on that in my computer, but it would be a nice bonus.
Optical Drives: Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM & Lite-On 12x10x32 CDRW (Old Computer)
Sound: Hercules Game Theater XP Connected to Kliplisch 4.1s
PCI Cards
D-Link DWL-520+ 802.11b Wireless PCI Card (Old Computer)
Winfast Delux 2000XP $40 (FS/FT)
A 2nd Video Card
Monitors:
1) 18" Princton LCD for 2D aps connected to the PCI Card
2) 19" CRT Connected to the AGP Card
As for the CPU, do you guys know of any retailers selling unlocked Bartons? Preferably retail? As for my memory selection, I know 256 MB isn't ideal for WinXP, but it is basically what I am running right now and it seems ok. I plan to add another 256 MB for Dual Channel when mem prices drop a bit. What would be a good HS/F to slap on this thing? I really don't want to exceed $30 for that. Finally, would my multi-monitor setup work as i have planned? Can I game on just the CRT and just keep the LCD up for 2D stuff?
PS. This is what I am upgrading from (you'll see this all on FS/FT pretty soon
)
1.2 Ghz T-Bird (9x133) with a Volcano HS/F (forgot the number)
Asus A7V133
256 MB PC133 SDRAM
Radeon 9100 64 MB
120 GB WD/80GB Maxtor
16x DVD/12x CDRW
