My friend wants to set up a linux based server for sh1ts and giggles, and wants to do it on a budget.

I'd recommend an Nforce chipset board but I don't know about any compatibility issues.

Is there a site where I can look it up or does anyone know offhand if those board work well?

Try looking at the HCLs (hardware compatibility lists) at Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake etc. Just Google search 'Linux HCL XXXX' where XXXX is the name of the distro you want.

I am by no means the Linux guru, but through my travels I have seen some Hardware Compatibility Lists for certain distros.

Here is Red Hat's, but I don't know if they do Motherboards. Good luck.
